SHINING BEACON OF POSITIVITY

Continuing from last weeks post, I’m going to showcase another one of my initial tracks I wrote in my early days, the song ‘Delusional Troll’. I don’t usually like to reveal the true meaning of my lyrics as I prefer the listener to decide their own interpretation but I’m going to make an exception this time.

When I finished my GCSE exams in the town I grew up in most of my closest friends (including me) parted ways to different areas of the county. I decided to start my A levels in a town about 30 minutes away from where I lived. Not being the most confident teenager around it took me a few weeks to get my footing and find a group of people I fitted in with.

Dartmouth, the town I grew up in.

Within my new circle of friends only one was interested in making music with me. This particular person was whom I eventually wrote the song about…

Here are the lyrics:

The troll out on the streets
Busking his heart out or so he believes
He hasn’t a soul but I’m starting to see
That delusional troll
Hasn’t a clue what I think
Hasn’t a clue what I think

Under his bridge he thinks he can do anything
Delusional troll
Delusional troll

Love is a word that he’ll throw about
To fill a gap in his songs
I hope you can see that love isn’t seen
By this man called delusional troll

Now, you’re probably thinking that my teenage self was a horrible person. Casting judgment on someone who probably didn’t deserve it… trust me when I say this guy was the epitome of someone you meet in life that at first seemed to be a shining beacon of positivity, only to then sour into their true rotten self once the dust had settled.

I’m not going to go into to detail about what this particular individual did that pissed me off so bad at the time, because who really cares about irrelevant teenage drama that everyone has had to deal with. But hopefully my lyrics are self explanatory and give you a small insight to his character. Growing up in a small town with friends who thankfully provided little drama as a kid, I was definitely dropped into the deep end when I met this delusion troll.

Here is the track:

In other news I have started a Twitch channel. For anyone who doesn’t know, it’s a hugely popular website where people can live stream content such as video games, podcasts and various other hobbies to the internet. If you’re interested in seeing what I get up to in my spare time then feel free to watch along when I’m online.

My nerdy alter ego.

Here is the Twitch stream link:

If you’re signing up to Twitch or already have an account I’d appreciate a follow, doing so will notify you when I’m live.

I’ve also recently uploaded all my songs individually to YouTube, separating the lyrical and instrumental songs into two different playlists. Handy for anyone who needs a choice of background music.

WEARING GOLD LEAF

WEARING GOLD LEAF

I played the guitar
You held the gun
You answered the questions
I answered none

Some days you played cool
Crowds you’d just hate
You smiled in the mirror
Thanking good fortune’s fate

Counting your blessings
Wearing gold leaf
From a roof top terrace
You fired your gun; wounded the chief

Last time I saw you
You’d swapped ammo for gold
I still play the guitar
Your story now told

DON’T HATE THE PLAYER, HATE THE GAME

A local cemetery I never knew existed

DON’T HATE THE PLAYER, HATE THE GAME

I liked you so much better
When your story was untold
Now you go backward looking forward
Believing all that glitters is really gold

You keep your demons in a suitcase
An arrow in your heart
You’re crying out for plan B
But the game has yet to start

You’re trapped in endless dreamland
I don’t understand one half of what you say
You think you are the hunter
You can’t see that you’re the prey

I remember when you were someone
There’s still time for you to be so much more
You’ve a heart and soul inside of you
Just don’t leave them at fame’s door

I don’t know if you’re listening
But it matters all the same
When I tell you what I’m thinking
Don’t hate the player; hate the game

An easy to the ear Backing Track. I hope you enjoy;

A BELL THAT DOESN’T CHIME

Source – Lieutenant Morris Meredith Williams was a talented artist and filled 15 pocket-sized sketch books while serving on the Western Front in WW1. The drawings, along with letters, he sent back home to his wife, Alice. There’s a book of his work called ‘An Artist’s War.’

A BELL THAT DOESN’T CHIME

You’re looking for a hero
That hero isn’t me
I gave up counting daydreams
And climbed into history
On that day I saw a thousand graves
They all said ‘Aged 19’
Wall to wall white marble stone
Stood on grass so green
They went on for miles
As far as I could see
Relics of remembrance
A cosmic storm’s debris

Were they just a band of brothers or just a band of new born ghosts?
Were it not for war they’d ditch the trenches for homeland’s coasts
What was once green grassland is now a battlefield so obscene
Where did it all go so wrong? Could it have been foreseen?

Guess that it hardly matters now
When the stones say ‘Aged 19’
Battles fought and lives all lost
Or something in between?

The portal up in the sky
Got opened bang on time
For mud and guts and diaries
And a church bell that doesn’t chime

Before lockdown shut the cinemas I’d seen the movie ‘1917’. Brilliant in so many ways. Since then I’ve watched it a couple of times more at home. I remembered I’d once written a song called ‘Age 19’ after visiting the WW1 graveyard in Etaples, France a few years ago where there were line after line of gravestones all marked ‘Age 19’. It makes you shiver; it makes lockdown a nothing. I’m told I had a relative who died on the last day of WW1. Imagine that. That war ended at 11am on 11th. November 1918. All he had to do was to stay out of trouble that morning. Sad, for sure. Above is the revised version of the original lyric.

I’m thinking ‘Time Out’ from my ‘Dream Rescuer’ album fits the mood of the trenches in WW1. I hope you agree;

DREAMER, ZEUS & THE OLD LADY

Art work by Funniest Animal Videos

I was reading an article that said when in the mood a cat can count up to 7. My immediate thought was that that made a mockery of the 9 lives theory, given that cats must be in no man’s land after 7 disastrous accidents. I wondered how the writer got to know that cats can count up to 7, so I wrote this.

The old lady with the broomstick she took everywhere never really wanted to live on Planet Earth but she didn’t have much choice but to stay put. She wasn’t a witch or anything like that. She just liked her broomstick and didn’t care for Planet Earth that much. She always said she found having a broomstick therapeutic. Her Earth problems were all about allergies. Hay fever, dust allergies and atopic dermatitis were her adversaries. She didn’t quite know what atopic dermatitis was. It was what her doctor called it and he knew more words than she did. What she did know was that it made her itch most times, although for reasons unknown she never itched when carrying her broomstick. Mostly she slept with the broomstick. When she went down town to do a bit of shopping on rainy days she had to leave it at home because she couldn’t hold an umbrella and the stick at the same time without falling over.

Luckily she never had animal type allergies. That’s why she kept two cats and always kept the bird feeding station down the bottom of the garden full of seed.

As she’d grown older then older some more she found life was getting boring. Her husband had died years before and she lived alone, apart for the cats. Morpheus and Zeus were the names she gave them. Because she couldn’t always remember Morpheus’ name she mainly called him Dreamer. He slept a lot.

It was because of her cats that her world got better then better still. It was on a hot summer’s day that she decided she would feed her cats outside. Her back garden was massive but because of her allergies she’d had it concreted over. To make the garden look better she’d planted masses of plastic flowers in tubs all over the place. It confused the bees but no harm was done.

Somehow, given that she was carrying her broomstick with her, she took with her a bowl each of gourmet cat food chicken cubes in sauce for both Dreamer and Zeus. The thing was that one bowl had five cubes, the other had seven. Zeus got the short end of the stick. He didn’t look that happy. She noticed that Zeus had nodded his head five times before popping over to Dreamer, where he nodded seven times. When he’d finished nodding he looked up at the old lady and shook his head in disappointment.  It was a that point she’d discovered that cats can count.

Ever since that day she never got bored again. Once she’d taught her cats to play counting games she never looked back. The cats were pretty happy themselves. They had known for some time that dogs can’t count, even though wolves could.

Every day, sometimes all day, you’d find her playing Snakes and Ladders and Ludo with the cats.

A FREE-VIEW SKY

A FREE-VIEW SKY

‘I think I’ve played this game before’
Said the dreamer to the realist
‘I get to close my eyes and count to 10
Before you shoot this guitarist?’

‘There is no time for your pointless make believe
All I want from you are facts
My world knows only black and white
And fantasy distracts
Imagination counts for nothing
The same goes for creativity that you call art
You’re a waste of space’ he said to me
Adding, ‘I’ve no heart but I am smart’

I got to open my eyes just in time
To look up at a free-view sky
Saw a rainbow and a flock of birds
Smiled and told him, ‘Art will never die
Art will live for ever
Not like you or I
Art is in everything there is
Natural or created it’ll never say goodbye’

Here’s my number from my ‘The Forgotten Daughter Of Zeus’ album. It’s called ‘Decider’. The album can be downloaded via BANDCAMP or, as I’ve just discovered (!) at AMAZON when searching ‘Zoolon Audio Albums’. I hope you enjoy;

STARING AT THE SUN

STARING AT THE SUN

Made the music, captured the magic for a song I’d never write
Eyes wide open staring at the sun I gave up on the fight
I’d spent my blind days searching for a single ray of light
A lost cause, I could see clearly now, no rescued dreams tonight

Wherever there’s love and hope you’ll find a soft and tender tune
One I put on the back-burner on that sour afternoon last June
Figured I’d finish the puzzle sometime, sometime very soon
Is it heaven or is it hell that hides on the dark side of the moon?

Will I trade the Devil’s last Kiss for a shadow on the wall?
Time’s on my side, I know that, it’s not my curtain call

Talking of Devil’s Kiss and Shadow on The Wall, plus the other three tracks, here it is. My Devil’s Kiss album’s last outing in 2020. If you want the download it’s just £4.50 or equivalent on BANDCAMP I hope you enjoy;

DREAMS & UNLOCKED PRISONS

‘The book of love has music in it
In fact that’s where music comes from’

Songwriter: Stephin Merritt

In a bid to curb the new variant coronavirus – that is 70% more catchable than the original – from spreading more rapidly in Kent I’m stuck in my unlocked prison in Tier 4 top-level lockdown. Only the food shops are open. It’s a pity I never got my Christmas gifts for the family online. It’s too late now. I’ve said farewell to creativity for Christmas hence today a song of mine from 2017 when everything was easy. First the lyrics, then the song itself. Sing along if you want. It’s called ‘Dream Rescuer’. I hope you enjoy, and HAPPY CHRISTMAS to everyone no matter what you believe in, or no belief at all.

You rescued dreams
And nightmare schemes
Spinning around inside your head
You kept them in your diary
A book you said you’d never read

Come morning
Come daylight
You’re lost in time
A dream you dared to dream
Come morning
Come daylight
You’re lost this time
I hope I said goodbye

You rescued dreams
And nightmare schemes
Spinning around inside my head
Pressed Petals
And four leaf clovers
Turning the pages
Of wild illusions

‘Dream Rescuer’ is the title track from my album of the same name. It can be downloaded from BANDCAMP It’s a ten track album for just £5 (or equivalent) you might like.

CHASING ONE MORE DREAM

‘The squirrel knows everything’

I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart’

From ‘The Scientist’ by Coldplay

In trying to write a basic verse as the basis for an American country style lyric, it didn’t go to plan, hence I nearly gave up. It’s a storytelling genre I don’t think I’ll ever master. But what the hell, it’s winter; it’s lockdown; I’m English; it’s Christmas.

CHASING ONE MORE DREAM

“Your songs are full of sadness
You know we’ll never get along
The time has come to end this
There’s no place together where we belong”

She sent me a ‘Happy Christmas’ card
Got it in the post yesterday
Inside she’d written ‘see you whenever’
A poor excuse, a poor cliché

Looking out of my bedroom window
The sky, all shades of festive grey
That was when the card she sent
I ripped in two, then threw away

Are there really songs of happiness
That don’t sound like over-sugared cream?
I’d rather bandage sorrow
Than go chasing one more dream

Here’s a number from my ‘The Forgotten Daughter Of Zeus’ album. It’s called ‘Hidden Beneath’. I hope you enjoy.

CITY OF HEARTBEATS

‘Door to Avalon’

CITY OF HEARTBEATS

What’ll we do when it’s over and done with?
What’ll we do when we unlock the door?
What’ll we do when we crawl out of the subway?
What’ll we do if it’s not like before?

What’ll we see in the City of Heartbeats?
What’ll we see in the waves and the tide?
What’ll we see in the fields of the living?
What’ll we see with our eyes open wide?

What’ll we make of shadows as dancers?
What’ll we make of blue skies and the stars?
What’ll we make of faces uncovered?
And what’ll we make of reborn guitars?

The answer lives in that City of Heartbeats
The place where we will hold hands once more
The answer is found when she rests her head on your shoulder
No need to worry about what went before

Here’s my song, ‘Rebirth’, a song that fits these words. I hope you enjoy;
