‘LOOKING FOR REASONS’ – THE BOOK

Originally from my song, ‘Liquid Truth’ – written in 2012, me a first year music student back then – these words below open Zoolon’s new book called, ‘LOOKING FOR REASONS’. They just about sum me up.

‘When will all the pieces come together,
And if I don’t like the picture am I stuck with it forever?’

Someone wrote me some kind words for the blurb for the book. Thanks for that. It reads like this;

‘Zoolon is better known as an accomplished songwriter, sound artist and musician with 5 albums to his name. He also writes in his own distinctive style. Following on from his first book entitled ‘The Words & Thoughts of a Dyslexic Musician’, the ‘LOOKING FOR REASONS’ new collection is an assortment of lyrical verses and short stories themed around today’s hapless society, it’s pluses and minuses, along with his own off-centre take on a dying planet. He’ll make you laugh, think and sometimes cry, but it will be worth it’.

If you’re interested, ‘LOOKING FOR REASONS’ is available on Amazon, either as a paperback or on Kindle. The UK link is below. Outside of the UK, just type in ‘Zoolon Audio’. The purchase prices have been cut right back, hence they’re not expensive. On Kindle Unlimited it’s even free!

Time for some music. Today, ‘The Pigeons are Switzerland’. I hope you enjoy;

JUST HEART TO HEART

‘Just Heart to Heart’, a second commission per my  POETRY TO SONG  product, from the talented lady of many skills, working across any number of genres, who goes by the name Geetha Prod’hom.

Sometimes, when working on a new song, the words get to speak aloud, telling me they want to be dressed in the music rather than share the stage. This was one of those. After a chat, the words and me settled on a cloak with an orchestral pattern. They’re rare things and I think that’s why I enjoyed the project like I did. Geetha certainly has a strong relationship with her words. Here’s the new song that now belongs to Geetha. I hope you enjoy.

That’s not all. When Geetha posts on her blog, you don’t just get the words, you also find she adds audio readings. I’ve chosen two examples here – in fairness I was spoiled for choice.  First, with the wonderful French accent that works for even those of us who aren’t fluent in French. Next, Plains of the Free Lie

DEAD MAN’S TEETH

‘Sink or Swim?’ by Zoolon

DEAD MAN’S TEETH

You’ve got the jump on life for once
You’ve got a head start just this time
Victory can taste sweet
If the victory’s not mine

You were a rabbit in the headlights
A lost soul out at sea
Staring at the abyss
Afraid of mystery

There’s a headstone in the graveyard
Sailor’s bones rotting underneath
They say the last bit to degrade
Are the dead man’s teeth

You’re swimming in salty water
Not drowning anymore
You hold your breath and dive again
You lose touch with the shore

You couldn’t face that yesterday
Thought tomorrow wasn’t real
Now you touch the starfish
No longer an ordeal

Once you sat upon the rocks
The oceans all you saw
The magic of the in between
Don’t matter anymore

There’s a headstone in the graveyard
Sailor’s bones rotting underneath
They say the last bit to degrade
Are the dead man’s teeth

You’re chasing the white horses
At the dizzy whirlpool’s end
Who you’ll meet at heaven’s gate
You guess won’t be a friend

You’re in uncharted waters
You’re journeying out to sea
Following the North Star
The curious mermaid – and maybe me – maybe me

SHE COULDN’T HELP HERSELF

black widow Johan Swanepoel

‘Black Widow Marionette’ – Artwork by Johan Swanepoel

All decent blokes support the feminists. However, in one society the masculists – is that a real word? – need a helping hand. You probably knew this already. In case you didn’t, ‘Black widow spiders are arachnids that are known for the females’ unique appearance and tendency to eat their mates’ – courtesy of livescience.com.

The spider climbed the old brick wall
He was looking for a bed
He’d left his web unattended
At least that’s what he said

By the time he’d reached the rooftop
He stopped to take a rest
And that was when he saw her
She looked great, he was impressed

So he thought that he must tell her
She was the most beautiful black spider girl
She smiled and said ‘thank you, Sir’
And gave him a sexy twirl

Later, under a full moon
They made love on a chimney stack
When that was over and done with
Was the time of her attack

She didn’t plan to do it
It’s just the way that she was made
She ate him alive for supper
Straight after getting laid

She never could help herself
Every lover she had got ate
Not one of them escaped her bite
Was it bad luck or was it fate?

Today, just my ‘heartbeat silhouette’ song called ‘Tick Tock’.  I hope you enjoy.

THE CLOAK

‘In The Days Before Tomorrow’

I got a marketing brochure selling vitamins and an easier menopause in the post. I’ve no idea how they got my name and address. The thing was that on the front cover it said ‘START THE NEW YEAR ON THE RIGHT FOOT’. It wasn’t a lot of use to me, I’m left-footed. Odd that they excluded left-footers’ in a racist sort of way.

The brochure also said it was, ‘PACKED WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED’. They lied. There was no mention of sleep, instant fame or shares in Amazon. Anyway, here’s some words for another day;

The worst thing about tomorrow
Is living yesterday
Setting fire to wild flowers
That bloomed again today

Trouble on a sleepless night
A dream before a dream
Point the way and I will follow
We’re both on the same lost team

We were lighting up the camp fire
Of just another forest lost
I saw a light beam in the gold mine
And asked how much the cost?

We didn’t need the torches
We swapped dead matchsticks for a naked flame
Opened up the opened door
You just smiled, said “That’s a shame”

We met again in the ruins
I said “I can’t see you through this fire and smoke”
You laughed aloud, said, “So sorry
Don’t you realize I’m your soul and you’re my cloak”

SNOWFLAKES AND FIRE

white1

‘The Sea Puts on a Show For Free’

I was fighting with insomnia when I wrote this. Couldn’t sleep. It didn’t help that The Arsenal had lost to the Chavs in a game we deserved to win. It’s at times like these words choose themselves and I keep out of their way.

The death toll is rising
Snowflakes and fire
In the tent of the future
We planned to conspire

You gave me a smile
I got lost in a dream
I haven’t got answers
You haven’t a scheme

One day on the top of death’s channel
We looked down at the ocean’s floor
And like the dying native American
You shouted out, ‘You know, there is so much more’

Holding hands as we jumped from the cliff edge
Down to the still water below
We made sure to remember what the dying man said
‘After fire there is always snow’

Here’s a number from Volume One of my Backing Track collection. It’s called a ‘DIRTY ROCK GROOVE’ – IN A MAJOR’. You’ll find them all at MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL   I hope you enjoy;

 THE ROSE WITHOUT A THORN

robin2

‘Robin Hood & His Merry Self’

I wish I’d got the pic when Robin Hood was sat at my table feeding himself on the crumbs of my pain au raisin. The second he spotted my phone facing his way he was off.

THE ROSE WITHOUT A THORN
Never looking backwards, two steps forward, two steps more
I took time out to rescue you from your nightmare from before

You smiled, you cried, you spat out words I never understood
I think you had forgotten that I’m The Pan not Robin Hood

Answer me these questions, don’t be honest just tell me lies
Was it you who stole my shadow? Was my shadow a trophy or a prize?

When the sun gives up on shining and the street lights get reborn
The Dream Rescuer cannot save you; you’re now the rose without a thorn

7 days, 7 weeks, 7 months ahead
On the night of last years Halloween The Pan was declared dead

Talking of the Dream Rescuer. Here’s a short song. You might have heard it before, maybe not. Anyway, it’s the title track from my first album on BANDCAMP where all my music lives. I hope you enjoy;

THE SUN DON’T SHINE

pride and time1 (3)

‘A broken mirror left behind’

A couple of posts back I wrote some semi-lyrical words. I called them ‘The Secrets of the Blind’ I have been playing around with them hoping to get a new song together. I’m still playing around, adding a slightly different take on the evolution of the songs words and melody. If not prompted by the brilliant poet YASSY KHAN I wouldn’t have got this far with this one. If you don’t know her already I recommend you give her blog a visit. As ever with lyrics they sing better than they read.

The secrets of the blind
A broken mirror left behind
Playing games with your mind
However undefined
They may be

When all you see is what’s inside your head
Like the open book you never read
For daylight read instead
The darkness of the dead
The sun don’t shine

You captured all the stars
From the West End to Planet Mars
Even today you bear the scars
Of burning violins and old guitars
You cannot see

The day Saint Peter broke your heart
That’s when you almost fell apart
You swapped a lead role for a bit part
That wasn’t very smart
I heard you say

Some music. Another track from Guitar Jam – Volume 1. This one is called ‘Alternative Rock Groove – F Major. I hope you enjoy;

THE SECRETS OF THE BLIND

folkstone1

Sky and sea and you and me and tall ships left behind
Echoes of the days before Planet Earth was undermined
Those with blinkered eyes that see never change their mind
They never think to take time out and ask the secrets of the blind

folkestone2

I think this number, the title track from my album ‘The Forgotten Daughter of Zeus’ sits well with this post. I hope it does anyway. All of my albums are accessible on BANDCAMP if you fancy a listen sometime.

COUNT TO THREE

flowers7 (2)

‘Calorific Tardis’

BAD ADVICE
‘to be adapted into a lyric’

You’ve got the motor; you’ve got the SatNav and a tank full
But you’re still stuck on the inside looking out
Blind faith, too blind and blinkered to realize
The kick you get living with all that doubt

There’s a doorway to Hell or is it some kind of heaven
All you’ve got to do is turn the key
Either way it really doesn’t matter
Just close your eyes, take a deep breath and count to three
