SHINING BEACON OF POSITIVITY

Continuing from last weeks post, I’m going to showcase another one of my initial tracks I wrote in my early days, the song ‘Delusional Troll’. I don’t usually like to reveal the true meaning of my lyrics as I prefer the listener to decide their own interpretation but I’m going to make an exception this time.

When I finished my GCSE exams in the town I grew up in most of my closest friends (including me) parted ways to different areas of the county. I decided to start my A levels in a town about 30 minutes away from where I lived. Not being the most confident teenager around it took me a few weeks to get my footing and find a group of people I fitted in with.

Dartmouth, the town I grew up in.

Within my new circle of friends only one was interested in making music with me. This particular person was whom I eventually wrote the song about…

Here are the lyrics:

The troll out on the streets
Busking his heart out or so he believes
He hasn’t a soul but I’m starting to see
That delusional troll
Hasn’t a clue what I think
Hasn’t a clue what I think

Under his bridge he thinks he can do anything
Delusional troll
Delusional troll

Love is a word that he’ll throw about
To fill a gap in his songs
I hope you can see that love isn’t seen
By this man called delusional troll

Now, you’re probably thinking that my teenage self was a horrible person. Casting judgment on someone who probably didn’t deserve it… trust me when I say this guy was the epitome of someone you meet in life that at first seemed to be a shining beacon of positivity, only to then sour into their true rotten self once the dust had settled.

I’m not going to go into to detail about what this particular individual did that pissed me off so bad at the time, because who really cares about irrelevant teenage drama that everyone has had to deal with. But hopefully my lyrics are self explanatory and give you a small insight to his character. Growing up in a small town with friends who thankfully provided little drama as a kid, I was definitely dropped into the deep end when I met this delusion troll.

Here is the track:

In other news I have started a Twitch channel. For anyone who doesn’t know, it’s a hugely popular website where people can live stream content such as video games, podcasts and various other hobbies to the internet. If you’re interested in seeing what I get up to in my spare time then feel free to watch along when I’m online.

My nerdy alter ego.

Here is the Twitch stream link:

If you’re signing up to Twitch or already have an account I’d appreciate a follow, doing so will notify you when I’m live.

I’ve also recently uploaded all my songs individually to YouTube, separating the lyrical and instrumental songs into two different playlists. Handy for anyone who needs a choice of background music.

‘MANDY’S DOOR’

folkestone sky‘For Free’ by Zoolon

The brainwasher wearing the grey suit that sparkled said he drove an Audi Quattro. He asked what I drove. I lied and said a skateboard. He asked why I didn’t wear, “A smart suit like mine”. I couldn’t be bothered to answer.  Also, he looked like someone who might end up on a #metoo rap. Maybe that was a bit harsh, maybe not. Later he mentioned that when he sees a door, he sees an ‘entrance’. When he spoke he acted as if he knew something no one else knew.

“What do you see when you see a door, George?”

I was going to say, ‘A door’ but said, “An exit” instead. He told me that was a negative reply. Probably was.

Outside his office, a giant office full of ethically sourced takeaway coffee cups and stressed people looking like they wanted to end it all, I noticed a fire exit door. I thought I’d like to have seen the brainwasher in the grey suit that sparkled try that door out as an entrance. Maybe my answer wasn’t so negative after all.

Out in the street just up from the office in front of a private house a white van pulled up at the same time a lady in a grey tracksuit that didn’t sparkle came out to greet the driver. A fat bloke in trainers. She apologized for collaring me before asking if I could give the van driver a hand carrying the door he was delivering upstairs. Said it was too heavy for him to carry and that she wasn’t strong enough to help. She hadn’t brushed her hair and only had one slipper on. Odd. The toenails on the foot without a slipper were, I think, painted lime green. I’m not good with colours. Anyway, I said OK, thinking all the time that this must be ‘The Day of the Door’.

The door wasn’t that heavy. Neat house inside. Now in her smart kitchen both her black cats left via the cat flap ‘exit’, reinforcing the positivity of my ‘exit’ theory of doors.

I noticed she’d brushed her hair and found her other slipper when she thanked me for helping out, offering  me a smile, a fiver and a slice of wedding cake (?). I would have settled for the smile but she insisted I take the fiver. I took the fiver, not the wedding cake.

She told me her name was Mandy, after Barry Manilow. I said nothing but thought if she’s been named after Barry Manilow then logically her name should have been Barry. I suppose I could have said my name is George, after Lana Del Ray but though better of it.

I wonder what Mandy sees when she sees a door. I never asked, maybe I should have. I guess todays song should have been dedicated to Mandy, but it’s not. This one is for Mr Brainwasher, it’s called ‘Delusional Troll’. I hope you enjoy;

There’s a new album close to completion. It’ll be out there very soon. Below, my current albums available on Bandcamp;

ZOOLON AUDIO – PING PONG BALL MASH

Using a random ping pong ball and an ancient Indian brass dish, all the sounds in this video (synths and bass included) are directly manipulated from the hits you see me make with the ping pong ball upon the dish.

This and projects like this give a small insight (although in the actual sample packs we sell we would produce hundreds more hits and texture sounds than on this video) as to how we create various types of genuinely unique sound sources for Field sample packs for sale on the Zoolon Audio website. As well as the unique sound sources, we also produce Electronic and Guitar sample packs. New products are regularly added. Excursions into new marketplaces are planned. All products are royalty free, top quality and low cost plus there are free taster downloads to try out from each product.

Even though our marketing is mainly aimed at musicians, electronic musicians, sound artists, video game producers and anyone creating music on just about all media platforms, I thought readers on WP might find this piece about how we process a product interesting. I hope so, anyway.

WISDOM TOOTH

untitled-png22-2

Just in case anyone thinks I’m unusually tall, the picture is of a very small door to a bedroom somewhere in France.

A random event that’s true but not that important. Driving past a field yesterday I pointed out that in the field was a strange looking horse. I was told that it was a llama not a horse. That was good to know as it would have played on my mind that a horse could look so strange.

I have a wisdom tooth that sometimes shifts and throbs for a few days. It can be very painful. I wrote this electronic piece WISDOM TOOTH at a time when I was in terrible pain. I hope you enjoy it more than I did the pain.

A LIFE

untitled-png-15-2

In composing this short (1:46) piece of ambient sound art I want to convey to the listener ‘A Life’ all the way from birth to death.

It could be a human life, could be any form of conscious life or anything that has lived through four seasons.

Hope you enjoy it.

Not too many words today, just a short (2:21) piece of classical music (with a movie trailer in mind) I composed and produced. Hope you like it.

RANDOM QUOTES ZOOLON LIKES

jean-lee

https://jeanleesworld.com/

I like Jean Lee (blog link above) even though she has challenged me to post one inspirational quote each day for the next three days. Thing is, I’m going to have to cheat and post the three quotes in one hit as I’ve got so much work on at the moment so I hope Jean will forgive me.

I’m not totally sure what inspirational really is. The online dictionary says, “providing or showing creative or spiritual inspiration” That doesn’t really help. I don’t think I’ve ever let myself take in those quotes you see in books and on posters. They always read like marketing hooks. Anyway, here are three things that inspire or have inspired me;

  1. “Your macaroni cheese is ready.”  A lot of the time I forget to eat so when I hear the words that my favourite food is ready I get inspired to eat and remain alive.
  2. “Nothing Else Matters.” Like every kid learning the guitar I wanted to be able to play something I thought would impress. This quote is simply the title of a Metallica song I grew up with. The day I nailed the fantastic intro was the day I got inspired and knew I’d play guitar forever. If you’ve never heard it before it’s worth a listen.
  1. “One Nil to The Arsenal” Years ago, before I was born my team The Arsenal used to play boring defensive football but kept on winning 1-0. This inspirational chant of Arsenal fans is sung on those days we go 1-0 up. It’s not a great song but it inspires me by keeping me in a good mood simply because it means we are ahead. I can never compose straight after the odd game we lose.

The challenge has rules. I have to pass the challenge on to three others. The problem here is that I’ve only been blogging for a month and don’t really know that many bloggers. So, all I can do is give a list of three out of many other bloggers who I rate a lot and see what they make of it. I’ll not be offended if any of those on my list think, “no way am I doing that”.

https://yassy66.wordpress.com/ – I could read Yasmin’s poetry all day long. Something lyrical in everything she writes.

https://aheartafire.wordpress.com/ – truly writes from the heart.

https://tedgiffin.com/ – artist and musician true to his own brand.

If any of you are interested here are the rules.

The Rules of the “3 Days, 3 Quotes” challenge

  1. Thank the blogger who nominated you, and share their website.

2.Post 1-3 quotes a day for three consecutive days.

  1. Nominate 3 people every day.

RANDOM THOUGHTS OF ZOOLON – NO.6

DCIM100MEDIA

This sign ought to read, ‘Do Not Throw Anything IN the Sea’. Someone throwing things ‘AT’ the sea surely needs help? I felt I had to take a photo although not sure why.

Whatever, I found myself sat in the back of a car being talked AT, at a time when I was trying to think through a new music video I am making for the Zoolon Audio website and whether to have a fried egg with my baked beans on toast or just the beans on toast later.

In the end, my train of thought was ruined when I was asked what would be the first three things I would do if I was the Pope. I tried to explain that I am not a Catholic, I’m not anything, but they kept pressing me for an answer. They were getting impatient. Eventually I answered.

  1. I’d have a mufti day to start with like the ones we had at school. The robes the Pope and the Cardinal’s wear look naff to me. I’ll probably start it off on a Wednesday and see how it catches on.
  2. I’d replace the wafers and red wine they hand out and instead offer custard creams and hot chocolate. I don’t like wafers and hate the taste of wine. It’s all only symbolic anyway.
  3. I’d get the nuns to dress how they wanted, maybe wear Converse trainers, dye their hair different shades, maybe wear swimming costumes at the beach so they didn’t have to stand around in a group just paddling. They remind me of penguins generally.

No one seemed that impressed with my ideas. They said I wasn’t taking it seriously. The thing is, I was.

Here’s an experimental electronic piece called ‘DECIDER’ I made. Hope you like it.

RANDOM THOUGHTS OF ZOOLON – NO.5

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I took this picture of a pointless fence on a beach. It would be no good in a big storm, wouldn’t keep invaders out or people wanting to go swimming in. I wonder why someone put it there? Possibly for the sake of art?

Another thing, I remember once I was in the middle of writing a lyric to fit a new melody when a thought hit me. I started wondering when the first creature who decided to walk out of the sea realised that if it stayed underwater any longer it would probably drown. Motivation?

Life is like that sometimes. When you are stuck in the wrong place, you must do something else or drown. Then the words for ‘Forced Practice’ finally arrived. It’s only a short song. I hope you like it;
