MAKING DRACULA REDUNDANT

‘Bono’s Worse Nightmare’

I’ve been watching the new take on Dracula on the TV. I’m two episodes in. It’s not brilliant but I score it OK. The thing is the writers have missed a trick. To be certain to save yourself from Dracula you have to remember to carry a crucifix around with you at all times. Dracula can’t cope with people holding a cross in his face. It renders him useless. A load of nuns in one scene all get killed by Dracula because they forgot to carry the crucial crosses with them.

Then I had this random thought. Why not wear a T-shirt with a cross printed on it? Better still, if you are living in Transylvania just get yourself a crucifix tattoo on your forehead. Sorted – no need to remember anything, and the plus is Dracula becomes just a bloke with dodgy teeth, out of work and down the Job Centre hoping for a gig that has a night-shift.

On top of that, if Bram Stoker who wrote the original Dracula book had thought it through he’d never have had to bother writing the book in the first place.

Victory – what is victory
When you win a battle and then the war?
Victory – what is victory
When you’re unlocking an unlocked door?

Pointless – call it futile
The way you boast how well you lied
Pointless – call it laughable
That you thought yourself the perfect bride

Love and hate – now out of hiding
Love and hate – smack in my face
I count losers in the graveyard
You count winners lost without a trace

I saw it – I saw it coming
But never spoke out of turn
Watched you fan the flames of yesterday
And watched the future burn

Listen – can you hear me?
Or are you bathing in champagne
Hold your breath and believe me
When I say you won the game

Probable; possible verse/chorus – it bounces like an old English folk song:
No reason to share a truth or live a lie
Since we walked in the cemetery where all dreams, they die

My sleepless night words have a lot of opposite takes on life and something else I’m not sure of, a bit like my song ‘Shadow on the Wall’ from the Devil’s Kiss album. Here it is. I hope you enjoy;

THE CLOAK

DSC00147 (2)

‘In The Days Before Tomorrow’

I got a marketing brochure selling vitamins and an easier menopause in the post. I’ve no idea how they got my name and address. The thing was that on the front cover it said ‘START THE NEW YEAR ON THE RIGHT FOOT’. It wasn’t a lot of use to me, I’m left-footed. Odd that they excluded left-footers’ in a racist sort of way.

The brochure also said it was, ‘PACKED WITH EVERYTHING YOU NEED’. They lied. There was no mention of sleep, instant fame or shares in Amazon. Anyway, here’s some words for another day;

The worst thing about tomorrow
Is living yesterday
Setting fire to wild flowers
That bloomed again today

Trouble on a sleepless night
A dream before a dream
Point the way and I will follow
We’re both on the same lost team

We were lighting up the camp fire
Of just another forest lost
I saw a light beam in the gold mine
And asked how much the cost?

We didn’t need the torches
We swapped dead matchsticks for a naked flame
Opened up the opened door
You just smiled, said “That’s a shame”

We met again in the ruins
I said “I can’t see you through this fire and smoke”
You laughed aloud, said, “So sorry
Don’t you realize I’m your soul and you’re my cloak”

Staying with the darkness theme, here’s my piece called ‘Barbed Wire’. I hope you enjoy;

SNOWFLAKES AND FIRE

white1

‘The Sea Puts on a Show For Free’

I was fighting with insomnia when I wrote this. Couldn’t sleep. It didn’t help that The Arsenal had lost to the Chavs in a game we deserved to win. It’s at times like these words choose themselves and I keep out of their way.

The death toll is rising
Snowflakes and fire
In the tent of the future
We planned to conspire

You gave me a smile
I got lost in a dream
I haven’t got answers
You haven’t a scheme

One day on the top of death’s channel
We looked down at the ocean’s floor
And like the dying native American
You shouted out, ‘You know, there is so much more’

Holding hands as we jumped from the cliff edge
Down to the still water below
We made sure to remember what the dying man said
‘After fire there is always snow’

Here’s a number from Volume One of my Backing Track collection. It’s called a ‘DIRTY ROCK GROOVE’ – IN A MAJOR’. You’ll find them all at MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL   I hope you enjoy;

SACRED HOLLYWOOD

DCIM100MEDIA‘The Way It Is’ by Zoolon

Bored senseless, we roll the dice to see who gets to write the next line. Nothing better to do on the third day in a row of dark skies, Atlantic storms chasing each other through The Channel. Wet and windy. Windy and wet. Here’s what the dice gave us;

SACRED HOLLYWOOD

Blind eyes reading epitaphs

Or just graffiti on a wall?

Or maybe lovers and philosophers

All heading for a fall?

Somewhere in Oblivion

Sisters of Silence breaking bread

A fire raging in the forests of paradise

Hungry orphans left for dead

Dirty bombs and missiles

Every redcoat is fair game

Black or white or in-between

The privileged and the lame

Take my hand, I’ll lead you

To the Queen of Heart’s masked ball

Forget the sleepers sleeping rough tonight

We’ll stay out ‘till curtain call

No stilettos on the cobblestones

Just a refugee chasing fame

Hitching a ride to God knows where

Looking to change her passport and her name

I lost you to a circus clown

While the juggler was at prayer

And as the acrobats on tightropes laughed

At the two left-footed dancing bear

The jailbirds and the wise men

Playing poker in the dark

While in Camelot a jester sings

To a stray dog’s lonesome bark

Pegasus, the slaver’s ship

Amazing Grace, knew it well

Somewhere west of West Africa

In stormy waters, a living hell

Some believe in Arthur

Others in Batman or Robin Hood

The lost souls fed on fake news

Chasing dreams of a sacred Hollywood

Net result? I might have a new song. Weird and odd. I think I’m liking it. Needs playing around with. Needs a chorus. I always write my own stuff. Crap weather changed the rules this one time. A joint effort. Me and Mike Steeden (the old man; my dad) got together and let the dice decide who got to write the next line. He’s good at writing surreal. I gave it my best shot. He tells me when he’s finished what he’s finishing he’ll be back blogging.

Time for some music. Here’s my ‘One Man Band’ song. I have a lyric tailormade for it. The killer is I don’t sing ‘metal’ that well, or not at all. I’ll see how it all evolves. Hope you enjoy;

ONCE I WAS A UNICORN

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA‘Sun Day, Sunday’ by Zoolon

I’m taking a short break from blogging. A working break as I’ve a bespoke new business website project to sort and a mass of other things to do, so rather than just sit here dripping on about the pressure I’m under I figure I’d get it all done. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks. I’ll catch up on your posts then. Be good, and if you can’t be good, don’t be. See you soon – for now a few words and some music.

Once I was a unicorn

Missed out on Noah’s final cut

Got drowned and born again for no good reason

Back on the city streets every entrance door was shut

I’d survived the deep dark, death wish waters

Though I couldn’t bring myself to say ‘Amen’

One step forward, two steps back

‘I’ll see you someday, as and when’

But you, you climbed the highest mountain

Damaged, you had to leave me at first base

Was it really an avalanche that ate you?

When you went missing, lost forever without a trace

I’ll leave you with a couple of songs that have been picking up hits on ReverbNation recently. I hope you enjoy.

First a ‘gentle protest’ type number from my Dream Rescuer album called ‘Ticking Clock’;

Next, ‘Silent Films’ from the Rainbows End album. It wasn’t getting many hits for ages now it is. Odd.

If you’re interested in purchasing my work you’ll find it all at Bandcamp, below;

TICK TOCK & MR MOUNTAIN TOP

beatles(classic, official Beatles ‘Back in the USSR’ tie from way back. To eBay or not eBay, that is the question)

How can someone be busy and bored at the same time? I quite good at that. Anyway, a stab at a new lyric? Not sure. As I was wondering where words come from, this one took to the road sign that read ‘Weird Street’. I decided not to stand in its way.

TICK TOCK, TICK TOCK

The second-hand turns

Feels like I’m slipping through time’s net

Tick tock; tick tock

A heartbeat’s silhouette

The Queen of Hearts in handcuffs

Dragged before the King at court

He asks her, ‘What you guilty of?

She answers, ‘Getting caught’

The desert sun’s a spotlight

Showcasing the dead; the camels; the dunes

While grand Victorian ladies

Watch through telescopes from pink hot air balloons

It’s safe inside the slaughterhouse

If you don’t have four legs

Safer still in Camelot

Just don’t go stealing dragon’s eggs

Hitler took the poison pills

He wouldn’t have it any other way

Santa Claus took to drinking

Totalled his reindeer’s and his sleigh

The vanquished never take the bribe

And victims seldom lie

Go tell that to Mr Mountain Top

He’s best friends with the two-faced sky

I’m dreaming by day

Save my scheming for night

I look for the answers

But they’ve all taken flight

Time for some music. Here’s an older song I wrote some might have heard before, ‘Busking in Berlin’ that I’ve recently added to Zoolon’s ReverbNation profile. I hope you like it;

TRADING INSULTS

hands3

(a statue I spotted along West Cliff, Ramsgate – for reasons unknown, it seems to fit my song posted below)

As I understand it the 38th parallel is the dividing line between North and South Korea. I think it was about 4 years ago when the North were talking about how close they were to building a missile that could take out cities on the east coast of the US. The news worried me and a lot of others at the time. It was as clear to me then as it is now that if they did that, the US would bomb them flat in retaliation, and if that happened it would be the end of the world as we know it.

Watching the news bulletins right now it seems that it wouldn’t take more than a cross word here and a funny look there for this whole bombing scenario to kick-off WW3. Worrying in the extreme.

I’m a simple pacifist, who understands just one thing. The only peaceful solution to any dispute is to be had when the two sides sit down and talk to each other. Maybe I’m naïve, but as of now that is what I believe they should be doing. Trading insults is pathetic.

I originally posted this song – one I wrote about the North Korean ‘threat’ 4 years ago – around the time I started blogging. It seems relevant again right now – perhaps more so than before. It is an experimental number that doesn’t take sides. It just focuses in a surreal way on how this thing could pan out if the relationship between nations goes pear-shaped. It’s called ‘Erasing the 38th. If you’ve not heard it before please have a listen.
