STARING AT THE SUN

Made the music, captured the magic for a song I’d never write

In a bid to curb the new variant coronavirus – that is 70% more catchable than the original – from spreading more rapidly in Kent I’m stuck in my unlocked prison in Tier 4 top-level lockdown. Only the food shops are open. It’s a pity I never got my Christmas gifts for the family online. It’s too late now. I’ve said farewell to creativity for Christmas hence today a song of mine from 2017 when everything was easy. First the lyrics, then the song itself. Sing along if you want. It’s called ‘Dream Rescuer’. I hope you enjoy, and HAPPY CHRISTMAS to everyone no matter what you believe in, or no belief at all.

In trying to write a basic verse as the basis for an American country style lyric, it didn’t go to plan, hence I nearly gave up. It’s a storytelling genre I don’t think I’ll ever master. But what the hell, it’s winter; it’s lockdown; I’m English; it’s Christmas.

CHASING ONE MORE DREAM

She sent me a ‘Happy Christmas’ card
Got it in the post yesterday
Inside she’d written ‘see you whenever’

HOWLING AT THE MOON

It’s a pointless conversation
In a dark and empty room
You might as well go speak to
The grey wolf howling at The Moon

Searching for castles in the air
Lost in that same dark and empty room
Thinking of tomorrow’s daydreams
Praying they’ll come true sometime soon

This day, it counts for nothing
Worldwide, faces in disguise
In the clear sight of the invisible
Makes for sad eyes and sad goodbyes

Music wise the song below – one I wrote back when I was a student – fits my current mood, lost in a lock-down’s creativity free zone. The song seems it has real purpose now. I’d like to give it a new title. I hope you enjoy;

Of this week’s pics only the fourth one is mine. The others are curtesy of the old man. He’s not been 100% for a while now, hence he’s not been writing nor blogging. Some of you might know him. His name is Mike Steeden and he asked me to send his regards. Anyway, we dragged him out on the only decent day we’ve had over the last few weeks. My sea pics were taken on the coastline, he’d found a place below I’d never noticed before. I liked his work more than my own on the day.

LIPSTICK GIRL & TRADING SUITS FOR UNIFORMS

The only sounds I’m hearing are birdsong, bombs and guns
I ask myself the question, ‘Are we the only ones
With eyes that see and hearts that break and hands that paint the scene?
While out there in the muddy Somme, they all died aged nineteen’

Scroll forward another century, no history books required
Big liars with big egos, how come their followers admired?
Lipstick girl, at rest in shadows, a heart that beats no more
Since Big Ego traded suits for uniforms kicking off an uncivil war

I ought to explain who ‘lipstick girl’ is. She’s a real person and she’s out there somewhere. On my blog post last week a few of us spoke about the lipstick girl and how she got badly treated by a shopworker aggressively talking down to her for no good reason, saying her lipstick wasn’t an essential item, so she couldn’t buy it. Her story got in the national news. Anyhow, it got me thinking that lipstick girl would be my metaphor for all good people and represent a reflection of the bad places humanity has been, and still is. Shopworker person, just a figure of speech for all that is rotten.

Time for a song, an old one at that. I wrote back in 2014 and called it ‘Shout at Newsreels’. I’ve never done much with this number so far but it fits this post, plus I have been shouting at news channels lately. I hope you enjoy;

OLD LADY & HER LIGHT-BULBS

Hiding away where no one can find you is so much better than living out a pandemic locked away in a no man’s land where everyone thinks they ‘absolutely‘ must scores moral points.

The old blind lady knew that. She’d lived through wars and famine and years of the hatred of people like her, who knew stuff but couldn’t see a thing.

In the supermarket the woman on the checkout who sighed a lot told the old lady that light-bulbs weren’t essential items for blind people in lockdown. She said, “You must know you’re only allowed to buy essentials these days.”

The old lady put it to the woman who sighed a lot, that her Guide Dog could see and that was why she wanted a light-bulb. Request denied, the old lady wandered off home.

On Guy Fawkes night the explosions of fireworks scared the life out of all the dogs, cats and confused bats in the neighborhood. The woman on the checkout who sighed a lot had agreed with all her customers that fireworks were essentials.
