THE DAY THE TREES DISAPPEARED

Zoolon’s Simple Take on Trees

I wouldn’t like to be a tree in the Amazon right now. Having said that I probably wouldn’t particularly want to be a tree in the first place. I’d never get to see The Arsenal play again or get to eat macaroni cheese. Then there’s dogs with an urgent need to think about, plus if I become a tree I guess all my guitars would get sold on eBay.

More seriously, even though science has proven trees interact with one another and given that they reduce erosion, moderate the climate, remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store a mass of carbon in their tissues, plus trees and forests provide a habitat for many species of animals, insects and plants who would otherwise die out, we chop the lot down for a ton of pathetic reasons. Mainly it’s all about humans making big money whatever the damage to the planet they leave behind. Short term thinking? Too right it is.

Relevant to my mini rant, here’s my protest song ‘Sunlight & The Dust’ along with a few more ‘new photos of old photos’ almost forgotten.

The spaceman from a green blue planet stopped by to pay us a visit and say “hello”
Earthman offered him a ready meal wrapped in plastic and a home delivery pizza just for show

Spaceman said, “Man you’ve some great trees here, it’s a shame you’ve not got that many anymore”
Earthman just shrugged and said “That’s how we like it, besides we don’t eat apples like before”

“You’re kidding me, the trees keep you lot well and alive, their fruit is the best thing you can get
This rubbish you just served up isn’t for me mate – it’s less a meal; more a bloody threat”

OXYGEN IN A CUP

lana-del-rey-national-anthem

‘Money is the reason we exist
Everybody knows it, it’s a fact – kiss, kiss’
Lana Del Rey from her song, ‘National Anthem’

OXYGEN IN A CUP
The Amazons on fire again
The ice caps melt away
Sea levels gone and lost the plot
Plastic bottles don’t decay
Exhaust fumes and factory waste
Industry is all
The planet keeps on spinning
But it’s heading for a fall
Species upon species
Mankind has killed the lot
Go kill another elephant
Go take another shot
We breed too many humans
While the food chain’s breaking up
Come tomorrow, come the big bang
Our lungs will scream for oxygen in a cup

It wouldn’t be right to quote Lana without posting a vid of her song ‘National Anthem’. To me it’s a masterpiece stuffed full of satire.

No way can I best Lana, so today just me and an angry guitar. The number is called ‘One Man Band’;

MR ANGRY’S PLAYING FIELD

G4 (B&W)‘Hot Day in Berck’

I’ve written a few protest songs before.  Generally mine are not angry songs. It’s not how I’m made. However, this one I’m playing around with is singing well enough, but singing angry. Maybe that’s the way it should be sometimes?

ONE LESS INNOCENT

Guns and souvenirs

No wasted bullets, just wasted tears

As shots ring out the big man sneers

He takes no notice of honest fears

To the refrain of abusive jeers

And poor excuses no one hears

They pull the strings, the puppeteers

The firearm freaks, the profiteers

Cries for help fall on stone deaf ears

Who cares if death finds new frontiers?

Who cares that under a gravestone she premieres

On the ‘One Less Innocent’ stage of slaughtered peers?

Here’s an example of one of my regular style protest songs. This one is from the ‘Dream Rescuer’ album that hopefully makes its point without any anger. It’s called ‘Ticking Clock’. I hope you enjoy;

Stupid things make me laugh. This is a true story. So I’m in the smelly post office. As ever a long queue. The only good thing about being in a queue is you get to listen to people chatting. In front of me two blokes. One says that he’s sick and tired of rowing with his wife all the time. He says to his mate, “I’ve told her time and time again we need to find a level playing field.” His mate agrees and says, “Perhaps you both will find that level playing field when you go on holiday. A break always helps – you know, a change of scenery and all that. Where is it you’re going by the way?” Mr Angry with his wife replies, “We’re hiking up in Welsh mountains’.” His mate says, “Well you ain’t going to find a level playing field up there it’s all hills.” Like I said, stupid things make me laugh.

Finally and probably the best lyric of all time, although you might not agree unless you’re a Gooner like me. An Arsenal classic originally from the Invincible years – before my time sadly – and just perfect after beating Newcastle ‘1 – 0’ in the first match of the new football season last Sunday. Class act.

10 DAYS AWAY

the nothing4‘The End of The Beginning’ by Zoolon

In a few hours’ time my acoustic and me are off to the middle of nowhere for 10 days. No internet access unless I can manage to take my mobile into a town or city. How surreal is that? No social media.

Also, it maybe the last time I get to have free movement across European borders. Soon the nasty UK brigade will ruin everything.  Anyway, I’m sorry to be missing your posts for those 10 days.

For now, a few random bits and pieces you might enjoy. First, my most popular song if stats are anything to go by ‘Sunlight & The Dust’

Although I ought to add that  ‘Devils Kiss’  featuring a duet with Fifi Rong is catching up at a rate of knots.

Next, a vid from two years back of me mucking about with guitars;

Lastly, a piece of classical music electronic style called ‘Barbed Wire’. It reminds me of ‘borders’;

NEVER FORGOTTEN

spitfire‘Never Forgotten’

Mucking around with semi-protest song words on the guitar I suddenly realized I was playing to my ‘Rainbows End’ melody. Basically, I’d plagiarized myself. I’ve never done that before. Back to the drawing board.

ENGLAND, OH ENGLAND

At my door they try selling me their religion

Online they want my money to sell me fame

On the street, the Far Right are dishing out their flyers

I just smile; tell them I don’t play their racist game

England, oh England take a good look in the mirror

You’ll see you’re not a thieving Empire anymore

England, oh England you can’t turn the clock back

And rescue the glory of what never was before

Black or white we’re all of just the one race

Give us all an honest chance and lend a hand

Better that than bigotry and discrimination

You’ve lost the plot forever, my England

Here’s the YouTube version – all the songs – off the new album, ‘Devil’s Kiss’. Hope you enjoy;

RUNNING FROM THE SUN

baby tom

‘A Brand New Tomato Plant’ – A shame I had to be told it was a tomato plant

‘March of The Dead’ – a piece of Sound Art I made using samples and sound manipulation a while back. A bit of dark fun. I miss not having the time to make more of this kind of art. I hope you like it;

THE UGLY & THE POWERFUL

I met a man from Syria

A woman from Lebanon

They’d crossed 1,000 oceans

Running from the sun

Running from oppression

Running from religious hate

Fortune’s wasted on crooked traffickers

Running from a starving state

They turned up in this England

In the hope of charity

Asylum and a place to sleep

Never knowing that could never be

Sure, there are so many

Who care, who act, who try

But the ugly and the powerful

Sit back and watch them die

This song hasn’t had an airing on WP for ages. So, if you’re not familiar with it, or even if you are and just want another listen, here it is, ‘Sunlight & The Dust’ from my Dream Rescuer album. I hope you enjoy;

MUSHROOMS ON MARS

nivelles

‘Hot Chocolate Central’ – Café Culture, Nivelles, Belgium

For reasons I can’t explain I was wondering if mushrooms would grow on Mars. I never did work it out. Probably they don’t, but thinking about Mars I remembered this song I wrote. It’s one of my earlier ones. I last put it on the blog when I started with WP back in late 2016. Since then it’s been curated. It’s never appeared on any of my albums as yet but still gets streamed a lot. Here’s the song and the lyrics so you can sing along if you want. I hope you enjoy;

RED PLANET

Red planet take good care of me

Make it better than before

I’m tired of what we’re doing here

Just show me the door

I think I’ll take that flight – I’ll take that flight to Mars

I’ll leave this Earth behind, won’t even wave goodbye

I know there’s no coming back

Why would I anyway?

There’s nothing left here I want

I know there’s no coming back

Why would I anyway?

There’s nothing left to say

Red planet take good care of me

Make it better than before

I’m tired of what we’re doing here

Just show me the door

I know there’s no coming back

Why would I anyway?

The end game now is playing out

I know there’s no coming back

Why would I anyway?

Here time is running out

On Mars the wind blows hot and cold

On Mars there is no war

On Mars I’ll never have to ask

“What are we fighting for?”

Red planet take good care of me

Make it better than before

I’m tired of what we’re doing here

Just show me the door

Sometime in the future

I might look up to the sky

Back at where I came from

At a planet cold and dry

I think I’ll take that flight; I’ll take that flight to Mars

A COAT OF FEW COLOURS

DCIM100MEDIA‘The day before the asteroid hit’ by Zoolon

The news that some sicko coward morphed into the big man because he carried a gun into a synagogue and randomly killed loads of innocent people leaves us relatively normal people wondering ‘Why?’

I had this random thought about the ways certain humans try to justify carrying a gun, some relying on the rule of law phrase, ‘The right to bear arms’. Maybe it would be better all-round if that sentence read, ‘The right to bare arms’ instead. That way the worst thing that could happen would be a sicko cowardly bloke wandering about in a short-sleeved t-shirt or a vest instead of carrying a shooter. A pity really that the bloke who wrote the original constitution version wasn’t a dyslexic. Had he been dyslexic the world might have been a much better place.

It’s a shame I have to have a stab at satire to explain how I feel. Can’t think of any other way to do it. The thing is words and music are all I’ve got.  Sad times we live in.

CARRYING A GUN

It’s easy for a loser to become an alpha-male, when he’s carrying a gun

It’s easy for him to terminate just about anything, when he’s carrying a gun

He can take pride in having a big mouth, when he’s carrying a gun

He can take pride in doing his God’s work for Him, when he’s carrying a gun

He finds it easy to kill the innocents without remorse when he’s carrying a gun

The thing is, you’ll always be a prize arsehole when you’re carrying a gun

I’m guessing that doesn’t bother you, when you’re carrying a gun?

I need to stress here that I’m not having a pop at Americans. Far from it. Every nation has its scum. Here in the UK we have our fair share – they generally carry a knife. America is a nation of great creativity and generosity – I know that from the people I meet here on WP – besides, I don’t go scoring cheap points. Respect.

Time for some music. A bit of a protest number I wrote a while back, ‘Shout at Newsreels’;

Words for the sake of words;

A COAT OF FEW COLOURS

I wear a coat of few colours.

I write a lot about rainbows

but those who say they know these things

 tell me the rainbows I see

are just black, grey and white

I’m good with that

always was

If they never mentioned it

I’d never have known

so nothing really changed

STELLA & THE RAINBOW

dover 16072017 6 (3)‘Rainbows End’ by Zoolon

Stella was addicted to breathing, so you can image how pissed off she was when the world ran out of fresh air.

A few nights earlier, by candlelight, she had plugged in her Les Paul only to discover there was no power. No power = no music. She took a look out of her bedroom window and all she could see was a black nothingness. No power also meant her electric cooker wasn’t working either. Stella opened a can of Heinz Baked Beans and ate them cold, straight from the tin.

Until recently she was chasing the rainbow’s end. Not to find a pot of gold or anything like that. She just wanted to know what the end of a rainbow looked like.

She remembered that I lived in an eco-friendly recyclable plastic bubble moored up on the Medway near the Docks, so she came over to my place and asked if she could have a fix of fresh air and maybe, if I didn’t mind, live with me in my bubble. She promised not to be a nuisance. I said OK, but felt I it only fair to tell her that I only had enough fresh air left for about two hours. She was good with that.

When we did finally run out of both fresh and stale air Stella held her breath. I forgot to do that, but didn’t forget to blow her a kiss and wave goodbye.

Before there was no air left for us to breathe the last thing I remember was Stella singing me her version of this song.

She had a sweet voice.

POLE DANCER OR WEIGHTLIFTER?

montreil sized 2‘Branch Lines’  by Zoolon

This is all true. For reasons I won’t bore you with, at some stage most days I find myself visiting the local Post Office. It’s not a place that sparks creativity, that’s for sure. Quite the opposite. Generally I end up in a queue, often with a smelly person in front of me and someone sneezing at will or coughing their guts up stood behind me. Also it’s a place where people talk total rubbish.

So, there I was in the queue yesterday, minding my own business when I hear two women – a bit older than me I’m guessing, but not old, old. One says to the other, “What would you rather be, a pole dancer or a weightlifter?” I was thinking what an odd comparison when her friend answered, “A pole dancer because they get more tips. Which one would you choose?” Fair play I thought. Certainly to the best of my knowledge weightlifters probably don’t get tips that often. Anyway, the other one answers, “I think I’d be a taxi driver because I’m pretty sure they get more tips than pole dancers.”

I was left wondering why she included ‘weightlifters’ in the question in the first place, just before I lost the will to live realising that that was 10 minutes of my life I’d never get back.

Things got a bit better on the brain cell front when I overheard the bloke in a suit at the back of the queue shouting at someone on the other end of his mobile. What this bloke shouted was epic. It went like this, “I think you’ll find I’ve created more time.” ‘Created more time’!!!! Now that is major and I fully expected people would drop to their knees singing, ‘Hallelujah’ and start worshiping him. No one did though.

When I finally made it to the counter the woman who served me, I guessed from her emotionless expression, must be right up there when it comes to poker. Anyhow, throughout the whole of my transaction she never uttered a single word. Respect.

Time for a song. This one hasn’t been aired for ages. It’s the only published song from my discography where the lyric isn’t one I wrote. This one was a collaboration. It’s called ‘The Sunlight & The Dust’ from my Dream Rescuer album and it’s another that’s made its way to the headphones of ReverbNations curators. I live in hope, and hope you enjoy;

By the way, at the top of this blog post is the ‘Your Poetry to Song’ link. If any poets out there fancy having their work put into song then hopefully I’m your man. All you need to do to get a project under way is contact me via that link.
