PRIDE & TIME

‘Sunday. The day after the sky ran out of rain‘

I got another request for a song on my blog, this time from the excellent blogger called ‘The Hinoeuma’ – here’s the link https://cosmic-observation.com/ – definitely worth a visit if you haven’t been there before. The song in question being ‘Pride & Time’.

The story behind this one started not long after I’d bought my new American Fender Telecaster. Whenever I began playing this guitar it was as if it was begging me to compose in American style. I’m not sure why, but it seemed to have a mind of its own. Here it is. Lyric – adapted from a whole mass of words I’d written – first, the song follows on behind. The album the song came from called ‘The Devil’s Kiss’ is available to download on BANDCAMP I hope you enjoy.

A MERMAID IN A FISH TANK

I’m a question not an answer
You’re a bullet not a gun
Disaster after disaster
Like a shadow on the run

You’re a mermaid in a fish tank
On a shelf against a wall
I’m the wizard without a magic wand
But I don’t care at all
Because in the dead of the night
I think about tomorrow

I save my songs for another rainy day

All the pics here were taken in a place called Samphire Hoe, Kent. It’s a 30-hectare site at the foot of Shakespeare Cliff and was created from 4.9 million cubic metres of chalk marl dug to create the Channel Tunnel. A great place for scenery, peace and quiet, walks, wildflowers, birds and sea-angling.

I really don’t like it when someone takes sneaky pics of me – like this one from a few days ago before the storms. I’m posting this to win a dare. I look as miserable as sin, when all I was doing was having a think about how on earth did the line ‘you’re a mermaid in a fish tank’ arrive and ended up stuck inside my head.

I thought I’d give the new instrumental another outing while I’m still working on my new songs. It’s called ‘Herodotus’. I hope you enjoy;

HERODOTUS & MY NEW ‘OLD’ GUITAR

I think I’ve fallen in love with my new ‘old’ guitar. I’ve even composed an instrumental with it for the new album – see below. I got it as a gift from a family friend who never used it that much. Better still it’s a rare early 1960’s Burns TR2 Guitar. The family friend had the guitar for 48 years but never really got into it as he’s a classical guitarist. Prior to that its original owner had had it for a decade from new. I’ve had it cleaned up and serviced so it can re-enter the world of music once more. It ways a ton but plays so well. From what I’ve worked out artists like Brian May and Hank Marvin played Burns guitars back in the day. It now lives in my attic studio – I just hope my other guitars don’t get the hump.

As a precursor for the new album I used the Burns TR2 to make that instrumental. It’s called ‘Herodotus’ He was an ancient Greek writer who travelled all over the place – a bit like my New ‘Old’ Guitar. I’m pleased about the way this number builds. To me every new album needs at least one instrumental. I hope you enjoy;

‘The Long Climb’

The worst scars we have live inside our head
Worst scars don’t run and hide, they follow us to bed
A scar can be a memory of something you didn’t need to say
A scar can be mistaken words you should have chucked away

One time, some place, somehow we lost ourselves that day
Looking forward, moving backward, that’s the price we had to pay
The scars last for ever and nothing goes as planned
And although the game is over, we’re still watching from the stand

MEMORIES INSPIRE

For you I’d write a new song
Memories of you, they still inspire

A NEW MOON NEVER LIES

A Zoolon aside: I took a few pics of the Royal Military Canal running through the town of Hythe just up the coast from me the other day. I’d often wondered what the purpose of the canal was/is. I checked out its history. It runs 28 miles more or less parallel to the sea and was built as a defence against invasion during the Napoleonic Wars with France (1793 – 1815). Work started on 30 October 1804. Digging took just 22 months but the canal was not finished and ready for service until 1812. By then the French Navy had been defeated at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) and there was no longer any threat of invasion – which makes it a bit pointless, yet not totally pointless as the canal is now a great habitat for wildlife especially in summer when it comes alive with patrolling dragonflies, noisy Marsh Frogs and Kingfishers – not that I saw any that day.

THE INVISIBLE UNDEAD

I was up on the cliffs again, this time checking out a place called The Redoubt. I like the emptiness up there. I even got a few words together after the visit, but first I better tell you about the place and its hauntings.

“The Redoubt is a fortress that was later reinforced with caponiers in the 1860s to counter the perceived threat of invasion by Napoleon III. It was home and workplace to the regiments of the British Army for over 150 years. A great many soldiers died here. This place was the scene of tragedy. It is these circumstances which are believed to be the root cause of hauntings.

We could not have found a more clinically pure venue to investigate with no other access available, no passing persons, no wildlife, no insecure doors or windows and no interference from power or light sources yet we encountered a host of unexplained noises from the loud and forcible to the quiet and serene. Light sources were not always explainable. Drafts and feelings were explainable.

What are we left with? A number of totally unexplained noises in a building that had no facility to make them on its own.”

Lost love, lost limbs and broken hearts

THAT DAY CAN’T COME TOO SOON

Nothing matters this side of midnight
When fading shadows go chase the moon
I hope one day you’ll understand that
That day can’t come too soon

Here’s an odd thing – especially so for an instrumental. I got advised that this piece, ‘The Forgotten Daughter of Zeus’, the title track on an album of mine, got thirty-one plays in The States in just a couple of hours last Thursday. Ultra odd. With that in mind here it is. I hope you enjoy;
