HEARTBEAT’S SILHOUETTE

At last the sun came out and so did I. Most people dis Dover for dumb reasons. I don’t. Aside the fact that we have White Cliffs plus a magnificent Norman Castle to the east, the harbour overlooking France to the south, more cliffs to the west and forests to the north, Dover has the River Dour running through it. Dover even got its name from the Dour. It originally had a wide estuary on the site of modern Dover, although today it flows into the Dover Harbour through a culvert. The estuary was a natural harbour for the Bronze Age settlers and traders in the area.

Scrolling forward, The Dour Estuary was then used as a port for the Roman town, as a natural harbour for the Roman fleet. This silted up in the medieval period, necessitating the construction of various artificial harbours for Dover instead.

The river has been used since AD 762 to power various watermills along its route. These included eight corn mills and five paper mills. Buckland Mill near Buckland Bridge was one of the earliest corn mills, but has since been converted into flats. Crabble Mill is now a fully restored corn mill and museum.

Time for some music. My song called ‘Tick Tock’. I hope you enjoy. The lyrics follow and are a good example how lyrics are nothing like poems.

TICK TOCK

Second hand turns
Feels like I’m slipping through times net
Safer inside
Bring the fear out
Look for answers
Victims quashed
It’s a slaughterhouse
Can you feel that sound?

Tick Tock a heartbeats silhouette
Tick Tock a heartbeats silhouette

Subside to the true face we disguise
Inside we know the only way is down

Is it safe low tide
to this poison mind
we endure
(bring the fear out) ?
Is it safe to say that getting caught was the plan?
take my hand

Tick Tock a heartbeats silhouette
Tick Tock

Subside to the true face we disguise
Inside we know the only way is down

Tick Tock a heartbeats silhouette
(we endure)
Tick Tock a heartbeats silhouette
And we know who we are
And we know what we are

Subside to the true face we disguise
Inside we know the only way

DESTINY COMES WITH A CURSE

‘Lost in Surreal’
Untitled Identity

The last time I ever heard your voice
You were singing, crystal clear
Making up for lost time
Still begging to disappear

You never wanted fame, I know
Yet destiny comes with a curse
Drags you up then lets you down
I don’t know what’s worse
Than being fed a big lie
One that you believe
Just to find out later
You’ve nothing to achieve
Except maybe for insight
Into all that I confess
Knowing me completely
No need to second guess
There are places that we come from
And ones we’re going to
Sometime our paths may cross again
I guess I hope they do

I’ll tell the others to look out for you
To keep me up to date
I need to know that you’re OK
Not leave it down to fate

Here’s a song from my 2018 album ‘The Pigeons Are Switzerland’. It’s called ‘Francesca’. I hope you enjoy;

GINNY

Photography by Bjorn Looss –  Model is Guinevere van Seenus

GINNY

It wasn’t the dragon
It wasn’t Merlin
It wasn’t the jester
Nor his old tambourine

It wasn’t the French knight
They called Lancelot
Nor evil Morgan le Fay
And the fall of Camelot

Dark Age’s disasters
Round table no more
Le Morte d’Arthur
Lady of the Lake came ashore
She took care of Excalibur
Kept it safe under water
Away from the wars
Away from the slaughter

It wasn’t because of a battle
Nor a lost wedding ring
It was his lady Ginny
Who broke the heart of Arthur, her King

She shouldn’t get blamed though
She just loved two great men
Love has its drawbacks
In the now and back then

Some say it’s all fiction
Or was just a dumb game
But one things for certain
Nothing would be ever the same

I have to admit I’m into Arthurian legend lately. Reading is about the only plus coming out of corona virus. I don’t think this lyrical style verse will ever make a song, but who knows what direction I’ll take when the world’s back to normal.

Next, probably my favourite song for all sorts of reasons. It’s from the Irish band Villagers and it is what I’d call a complete number. It’s just a shame it wasn’t mine.

Here’s one of mine. A weird instrumental called Barbed Wire from my The Forgotten Daughter Of Zeus album. I hope you enjoy;

MEMORIES & NEW WORDS

Memories & new words are pretty much what my new book ‘Looking for Reasons’ is all about. Without ‘memories’ that inspire, whether they’re from yesterday or last year or ages ago, there would be no ‘new words’; no new songs. I like it that sometimes a few photographs from before trigger lyrical verse. Anyhow, here’s my short video for the book, followed by a few pics of places across The Channel I miss, but still and always will, find motivating.

‘LOOKING FOR REASONS’ – THE BOOK

Originally from my song, ‘Liquid Truth’ – written in 2012, me a first year music student back then – these words below open Zoolon’s new book called, ‘LOOKING FOR REASONS’. They just about sum me up.

‘When will all the pieces come together,
And if I don’t like the picture am I stuck with it forever?’

Someone wrote me some kind words for the blurb for the book. Thanks for that. It reads like this;

‘Zoolon is better known as an accomplished songwriter, sound artist and musician with 5 albums to his name. He also writes in his own distinctive style. Following on from his first book entitled ‘The Words & Thoughts of a Dyslexic Musician’, the ‘LOOKING FOR REASONS’ new collection is an assortment of lyrical verses and short stories themed around today’s hapless society, it’s pluses and minuses, along with his own off-centre take on a dying planet. He’ll make you laugh, think and sometimes cry, but it will be worth it’.

THE ART OF FROST – ON CARS

Most days this winter are either freezing cold and rainy, or just plain horribly cold with frost everywhere. Generally the frost is just a white cloak, nothing special. However, yesterday when I thought I’d give the cars – not being used hardly at all because of the lockdown – a run before the batteries die I saw this ‘frost art’ on the bonnets. Surreal or what.

Note the seagulls couldn’t help themselves on the bonnet

Some music to fit my mood. The song, ‘Hooked’. It’s from my ‘Rainbow’s End’ album available for download on BANDCAMP  When I wrote this back in 2017 I was having a battle with creativity, hence I wrote about my relationship with it. Scroll on, 3 years later and I’m back where I started, having another battle – same enemy. I hope you enjoy;

A FREE-VIEW SKY

A FREE-VIEW SKY

‘I think I’ve played this game before’
Said the dreamer to the realist
‘I get to close my eyes and count to 10
Before you shoot this guitarist?’

‘There is no time for your pointless make believe
All I want from you are facts
My world knows only black and white
And fantasy distracts
Imagination counts for nothing
The same goes for creativity that you call art
You’re a waste of space’ he said to me
Adding, ‘I’ve no heart but I am smart’

I got to open my eyes just in time
To look up at a free-view sky
Saw a rainbow and a flock of birds
Smiled and told him, ‘Art will never die
Art will live for ever
Not like you or I
Art is in everything there is
Natural or created it’ll never say goodbye’

Here’s my number from my ‘The Forgotten Daughter Of Zeus’ album. It’s called ‘Decider’. The album can be downloaded via BANDCAMP or, as I’ve just discovered (!) at AMAZON when searching ‘Zoolon Audio Albums’. I hope you enjoy;

STARING AT THE SUN

STARING AT THE SUN

Made the music, captured the magic for a song I’d never write
Eyes wide open staring at the sun I gave up on the fight
I’d spent my blind days searching for a single ray of light
A lost cause, I could see clearly now, no rescued dreams tonight

Wherever there’s love and hope you’ll find a soft and tender tune
One I put on the back-burner on that sour afternoon last June
Figured I’d finish the puzzle sometime, sometime very soon
Is it heaven or is it hell that hides on the dark side of the moon?

Will I trade the Devil’s last Kiss for a shadow on the wall?
Time’s on my side, I know that, it’s not my curtain call

Talking of Devil’s Kiss and Shadow on The Wall, plus the other three tracks, here it is. My Devil’s Kiss album’s last outing in 2020. If you want the download it’s just £4.50 or equivalent on BANDCAMP I hope you enjoy;

LIPSTICK GIRL & TRADING SUITS FOR UNIFORMS

LIPSTICK GIRL & TRADING SUITS FOR UNIFORMS

The only sounds I’m hearing are birdsong, bombs and guns
I ask myself the question, ‘Are we the only ones
With eyes that see and hearts that break and hands that paint the scene?
While out there in the muddy Somme, they all died aged nineteen’

Scroll forward another century, no history books required
Big liars with big egos, how come their followers admired?
Lipstick girl, at rest in shadows, a heart that beats no more
Since Big Ego traded suits for uniforms kicking off an uncivil war

I ought to explain who ‘lipstick girl’ is. She’s a real person and she’s out there somewhere. On my blog post last week a few of us spoke about the lipstick girl and how she got badly treated by a shopworker aggressively talking down to her for no good reason, saying her lipstick wasn’t an essential item, so she couldn’t buy it. Her story got in the national news. Anyhow, it got me thinking that lipstick girl would be my metaphor for all good people and represent a reflection of the bad places humanity has been, and still is. Shopworker person, just a figure of speech for all that is rotten.

Time for a song, an old one at that. I wrote back in 2014 and called it ‘Shout at Newsreels’. I’ve never done much with this number so far but it fits this post, plus I have been shouting at news channels lately. I hope you enjoy;

OLD LADY & HER LIGHT-BULBS

‘Pics of an angry sea & friendly clouds’

Hiding away where no one can find you is so much better than living out a pandemic locked away in a no man’s land where everyone thinks they ‘absolutely‘ must scores moral points.

The old blind lady knew that. She’d lived through wars and famine and years of the hatred of people like her, who knew stuff but couldn’t see a thing.

In the supermarket the woman on the checkout who sighed a lot told the old lady that light-bulbs weren’t essential items for blind people in lockdown. She said, “You must know you’re only allowed to buy essentials these days.”

The old lady put it to the woman who sighed a lot, that her Guide Dog could see and that was why she wanted a light-bulb. Request denied, the old lady wandered off home.

On Guy Fawkes night the explosions of fireworks scared the life out of all the dogs, cats and confused bats in the neighborhood. The woman on the checkout who sighed a lot had agreed with all her customers that fireworks were essentials.

Time for some gentle music for sad, sometimes silent, times. ‘A Life’ it’s called. It’s from my ‘Dream Rescuer’ album available for download from BANDCAMP I hope you enjoy;
