A NEW MOON NEVER LIES

A Zoolon aside: I took a few pics of the Royal Military Canal running through the town of Hythe just up the coast from me the other day. I’d often wondered what the purpose of the canal was/is. I checked out its history. It runs 28 miles more or less parallel to the sea and was built as a defence against invasion during the Napoleonic Wars with France (1793 – 1815). Work started on 30 October 1804. Digging took just 22 months but the canal was not finished and ready for service until 1812. By then the French Navy had been defeated at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) and there was no longer any threat of invasion – which makes it a bit pointless, yet not totally pointless as the canal is now a great habitat for wildlife especially in summer when it comes alive with patrolling dragonflies, noisy Marsh Frogs and Kingfishers – not that I saw any that day.

That comes as no surprise

When you look up at the night sky
You’ll see she’s wearing a flower disguise
That’s what the new moon told me
And a new moon never lies

PLACES THEY HAD BEEN STRANGERS IN

In a sentence on a comment on my blog the romantic, smexy style author Shehanne Moore had written the words ‘Places they had been strangers in’. I really like that line. It tells a hundred stories. Kindly, she told me I could use it. That’s just what I did. If you don’t know her blog I recommend you check it out – it even has talking hamsters. Anyhow, here’s the beginnings of a lyric;

Places they had been strangers in
Places where they could start again
Thinking of the now and then
They close their eyes and count to ten

Yesterday, long after midnight
In a bedroom full of bright moonlight
He found he had no words to write
Found he’d lost his appetite

She’d left behind her coat and cat
Her front door key and old straw hat
How the hell she forgot that
No good ever comes of tit-for-tat

Tomorrow’s smiles a sure win-win

THE INVISIBLE UNDEAD

I was up on the cliffs again, this time checking out a place called The Redoubt. I like the emptiness up there. I even got a few words together after the visit, but first I better tell you about the place and its hauntings.

“The Redoubt is a fortress that was later reinforced with caponiers in the 1860s to counter the perceived threat of invasion by Napoleon III. It was home and workplace to the regiments of the British Army for over 150 years. A great many soldiers died here. This place was the scene of tragedy. It is these circumstances which are believed to be the root cause of hauntings.

We could not have found a more clinically pure venue to investigate with no other access available, no passing persons, no wildlife, no insecure doors or windows and no interference from power or light sources yet we encountered a host of unexplained noises from the loud and forcible to the quiet and serene. Light sources were not always explainable. Drafts and feelings were explainable.

What are we left with? A number of totally unexplained noises in a building that had no facility to make them on its own.”

THAT DAY CAN’T COME TOO SOON

‘Morning Sun on hottest English day’

Nothing matters this side of midnight
When fading shadows go chase the moon
I hope one day you’ll understand that
That day can’t come too soon

I captured visions of the blackness
Two dimensions are fine by me
Up above hidden stars are restless

ONLY THE WINNERS RUN WILD

A Zoolon aside: In 55 BC Julius Caesar and his Roman army turned up in Dover ready to invade Britain. However, Caesar overlooked the cliffs from which the locals were lobbing giant boulders down at him. Thinking to himself, ‘I don’t need this’ and without a Plan B he gave the invasion a miss. Yet a year later in 54 BC he solved the problem by landing at a sandy beach up the coast – the rest is straight roads and history.

A day in the death of the soldier
A dream in the life of the child
Maybe, before the war he should have told her
Only the winners run wild

The water mirror meets reality

Listen to the west wind serenade you
From the east you’ll hear a symphony
Big man’s deaf ears are out to betray you
To the percussion of the battlefield timpani

Tomorrow is another day

A day in the lost life of the unnamed soldier
A nightmare for the fatherless child
Sad days as you never got to hold her
Hold your breath, only the winners run wild

STARLESS MYSTERY

‘Drama’

Most everything we see becomes theatre
A wild sea the ocean’s one-night-only stage
Up above, storm clouds dancing to the gale’s orchestration
And on the shoreline it don’t need any seating to engage

An audience of strangers who never bought a ticket
This show, the dark clouds have put it on for free
Eyes wide open until the standing ovation
A curtain call for a starless mystery

‘Melodrama’

And I’m feeling alright come tonight, come the morning
And I’m feeling alright staring at a restless sky
And there’s never going to be a replay or brand new season
I’ll never know if the story was the truth or just a lie

A SILVER RAY OF LIGHT

In the corner of the sky
Through the window of my mind
Looks to be a silver ray of light

To the shiver of a nightmare
Not asleep and not awake
If you hang around you’ll get the last invite

To the library of dreams
The home of honest schemes
And wild things that only come out when it’s night

You try to get away
From the demonic creatures at play
Whose only purpose is to cause you fright

But you can never count the cost
All that you can do is hope the morning sun shines bright

THE VIEW FROM ABOVE

‘The Way Back Home’

Just across from me is a place called the Western Heights. It’s now just a local nature reserve, but once during the Napoleonic Wars in the 1860’s, its vast defences were designed to protect Dover from French invasion.

It’s been said that the Western Heights of Dover were one of the most impressive fortifications in Britain.

They comprised of a series of forts, strong points and ditches, designed to protect the country and was reputed to be the ‘strongest and most elaborate’ fortification in the whole nation.

These days it’s a place to walk, to think and to check out the panorama…maybe dream.
