GOOGLE EARTH, A BUS RIDE & A BALLERINA

Ballerina Art by Shelby McQuilkin-abstract figurative artist

A couple of posts back I mentioned a mate of mine asking the most stupid question anyone has ever asked. It went like this, “How many times am I allowed to drive round a roundabout?” Although not a question this time, he’s been at it again on the stupid front. A couple of days back – this is all true by the way – I’m talking to him and he says what a horrible time he’s had on Google Earth trying to work out the directions to a town just 3 miles away from where he lives. He said he had to visit the place and he desperately didn’t want to get lost on the way. Given that he’s lived all his life in the same place, it’s hard to believe he didn’t know how to get to a town so close by.  I pointed out that he didn’t need Google Earth as it’s a straight road from his place, and that there’s no way he could get lost.

Next thing, I say, “Are you walking or are you on your bike?” He says, “I’m taking a bus.” I say, “Why are you checking Google Earth if you’re taking a bus?” He says, “I never thought of that.” He shouldn’t be allowed out.

Anyway, 2012 seems a long time ago.  I was 19 then, and that’s when I wrote this song, ‘Ballerina Dancing’. It was another number for my Liquid Truth concept album and is very much a ‘demo’ made for a uni songwriting module. I produced the whole thing from my bedroom in the days when I didn’t have much in the way of kit. It’s not that the sound’s rubbish with a ‘demo’, it’s just sound undressed. I hope you enjoy.

BALLERINA DANCING

I’ve never known love

And I’ve never known hate

And charcoal letters on the wall

Help seal my fate

Ballerina dancing

And she’s just a silhouette

An offer to the condemned man

Of one last cigarette

All I know is all I know

And all I know is real,

Like a scarecrow on the gallows

It is no big deal

I’ve seen the writing on the walls

In shadow land today

Telling of another place

A place of night and day

I’ve never known love

And I’ve never known hate

And charcoal letters on the wall

Help seal my fate

Ballerina dancing

Just a silhouette

An offer to the condemned man

Of one last cigarette

All I know is all I know

And all I know is real

Like a scarecrow on the gallows

It is no big deal

Ballerina dancing

I’ve never known love

And I’ve never known hate

And charcoal letters on the wall

Help seal my fate

Ballerina dancing

Just a silhouette

An offer to the condemned man

Of one last cigarette

One last cigarette

Here’s one from Imogen Heap called ‘Earth’. If you haven’t heard her music, I can report that Imogen is an amazing composer and sound artist. A unique performer.

SHADOWS HIDE MY SCARS

dover harbour

‘Shadows Hide My Scars’ is the final song from my ‘Liquid Truth’ album written about 4 years ago. This concept album, as you might recall from previous posts, is themed around Plato’s ‘Allegory of the Cave’.

This demo version reflects the moment when ‘the prisoner’ leaves the cave he’s lived in forever and heads off into what is a world outside previously unknown to him. A new reality, maybe a ‘real’ reality? All his life all he had known were shadows projected onto the wall in front of him.  Nothing else. The shadows were made for the only reality he knew and understood.  So, as the lyric to this song begins with, ‘Say Goodbye to Yesterday…’ By the way, I’ve been a bit behind with my blogging lately. I am tied up adding the final touches to my brand-new album. We haven’t fixed a release date yet, and there is still a lot of artwork to be done, but it’s almost there. I’ll be able to say more about this soon. Anyway, here’s ‘Shadows Hide My Scars’. I hope you enjoy it;

WORLD OF SHADOWS

DCIM100MEDIA

Another pic from the Festival of Marionettes held in Charleville-Mezieres, Ardennes, France. It’s on again this September and I shall try to get back there. The word surreal doesn’t do it justice.

Anyhow, I haven’t posted any music lately so I thought I’d make amends.

I’ve already posted several songs from my old concept album, Liquid Truth. It was themed on Plato’s ‘Allegory of the Cave’. This piece, using samples is the short intro, an instrumental, that tries to capture the feeling of the cave itself, not necessarily the prisoners kept there. I didn’t want too threatening a mood, as the cave was the only place the prisoners had ever known i.e. basically, their home.

Hope you like it.

A TALE STILL IN THE TELLING

george-st-margarets-4-2

This is a weird song. Deliberately more a word plus music song than a generic song type song. A flatlining vocal and electric guitar sometimes let loose.

It is another demo from the concept album based on Plato’s ‘Allegory of the Cave’ I wrote a while ago. This song is about the prisoner having left the cave and seen the wonders of the world outside. He returns to tell the others left behind about all the things he has seen. The problem is that they don’t believe him. They can’t see beyond shadowland, the only reality they have ever known. He finds their negativity disappointing and it is the disappointment that I am trying to convey in words and music.

The photo above I took at St Margaret’s Bay, Kent on Christmas Day as it reflects the sort of thing the others could not comprehend.

No in-betweens with this one, but I felt it a necessary track to make the concept album work. Hope you like it.

CHATTER OF THE GHOSTS

george-st-margarets-2-4

The above pic confirms my fear of heights.

Anyway, another demo song from the concept album written a while ago and based on Plato’s ‘Allegory of the Cave’. This track explores the insecurity the prisoner feels at the time he is leaving shadowland behind and is off out into the world outside the cave.

Hope you like it.

JUST A SHADOW ON A WALL

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I think I took this picture in Nantes, France. Anyway, another demo song recorded in a bedroom from a while ago when access to a studio was not always easy. Not that professional of me I know, however more studio recorded new music is on its way as I’m recording new songs all the time.  It’s just that I’m into resurrecting this older stuff at the moment as well. It reminds me to not let songs die hidden away in a corner somewhere forgotten.

As with the one called Ballerina Dancing posted a couple of days ago (https://zoolonaudio.wordpress.com/2016/12/19/ballerina-dancing/) this one is from the conceptual project ‘Liquid Truth’ themed on Plato’s Allegory of the Cave.

‘Just a Shadow on a Wall’ was important to the project as it was a link song dealing with the moment the prisoner, who all his life had been in the cave knowing only the shadows he was forced to look at as his only reality found out he was to be freed. A new reality awaited him.

Because of this, getting the structure of the lyric right was vital. Even more so than usual. Basically, this is a ballad focusing on his situation. In the actual allegory, the prisoner was forced to look at a variety of different shadows, so in working on the project I cheated as the shadow of the ballerina dancing was always in front of him, was all he knew of reality. Hope you enjoy.
