IT’S LIKE YOU DON’T EXIST

‘Cleo the Wise Owl’
She doesn’t talk that much but she did mention that
without bees, seeds & trees we are nothing.

Songs that that tell stories are fascinating me lately. I’m not sure why, although the plus with a song is – providing the melody is a good one – that a lyricist can get away with just a few words and a decent chorus to tell his tale.  Here’s the beginnings of such a song – the basic lyric/verse to be chopped about with come the time to record.

THE BLUES DON’T GET REVIEWS

I saw you on the silver screen
Living out the dream
Praise and fame and fortune
And a low calorie regime

I wrote the song you never heard
Maybe you didn’t like the blues?
At least not the way I sung them
The blues don’t get reviews

You’re all over the social media
The newspapers want you too
On the front of every glossy magazine
Outside the paparazzi form a queue

Yet sometimes on a rainy day
Sometimes in the mist
Sometimes in a crowded room
It’s like you don’t exist

What about some music? Here’s an ‘Uplifting Grove – C Mixolydian’ from the new ‘Guitar Jam, Volume 1 – Zoolon Audio Backing Tracks’ Album available on BANDCAMP

It’s designed for musicians but works as a piece of uplifting music.

For the record it’s not just all my albums that are available for download on  BANDCAMP  these days. Now you can select and download individual tracks for just £1 or other currency equivalents. I think they call it ‘Pick ‘n Mix’.

NERO ON A GOOD DAY

NERO

‘Fiddling While Rome Burns’
by Shena Tschofen

NERO ON A GOOD DAY
North, East, South & West
The Earth, a burning star
What’s not on fire is melting
While I sit back and play guitar

Like Nero on a good day
I talk a better game than the one I play
Our oxygen is running low

End times are underway

The big guns in their parliaments
They could sort out this mess
They won’t of course; they won’t of course
Giant ego’s never acquiesce

Here’s another guitar jam backing track you might like. It’s called ‘Surf Pop Groove – B Major’

And here, the full 3 hour/20 track album ‘Guitar Jam, Vol. 1 – Zoolon Audio Backing Tracks’ – being instrumentals they’re also useful as background music – on sale at Bandcamp for just £6.50 or whatever equivalent price in other currencies in the land where you live;

All my other albums live there too, namely Dream Rescuer, Rainbow’s End, The Pigeons Are Switzerland, The Forgotten Daughter of Zeus &, most recently ‘Devil’s Kiss’.

PRIDE & TIME

fk2 (2)‘Everything there is’

I can’t stop myself thinking about plastic. Boring but true. Like having a song on a loop inside your head, plastic has got under my skin. It’s like I’ve been set up to hate the stuff. That’s a good thing. Media sometimes does that. Not always. As a result I’ve ended up with a small portfolio of short verses on the subject of plastic. This is one of them. Who knows, maybe a song one day.

 Snow drifts in deserted deserts

No more rain on London Town

The sky is one big rainbow

The moon’s a circus clown

Seen enough; done enough

Don’t want to see no more

The tree of life died today

Drowned in a sea that has no shore

Seen enough; done enough

Don’t want to see no more

Planet Earth’s been renamed Planet Plastic

A blue, blue balloon time can’t restore

A song from the new album, ‘Devil’s Kiss’. This one is called, ‘Pride & Time’. My guitar got hooked on American style when I was composing this one. Hope you enjoy;

If you’re interested in my album the download is here – Devil’s Kiss at Bandcamp

or, for just £5 or equivalent in other currencies worldwide. Also, my complete discography – all 5 albums – can be purchased at £16 (a 50% saving on individual prices) at BANDCAMP

BLUE ANGELS

hythe‘Hythe on a Friday in Feb’

BLUE ANGELS

Instagram, your plucking at the feathers of blue angels

They all claim a Photoshopped body beautiful

She says, he says, “Look at me, see my great life, my ego flies

It never ever, never ever, ever falls”

Deluded fantasy in a free gallery of wannabes

And someone big who’s feeling very small

Slash your wrists, cause a splash, play the game of self-harm

Inside you must know you’re just a wasted fool?

For every fake smile, another maybe superstar

Possessed, distressed, come selfie time undressed

Impersonating celebrity’s golden robots

Fixing on a drug that’s called ‘Obsessed’

I get advised by someone in the industry that I’m mad not being on Instagram, “It’s the only place to be.” I sign up. Right now I think I might just stay mad. Look deep and the place is ugly. Yes, there’s some great artists there but mainly egos abound. I’ll hang in a bit longer and see how it evolves.

Time for some music. This one is from the latest album, ‘The Forgotten Daughter of Zeus’. It’s called ‘One Man Band’. Hope you enjoy;

LOUD QUESTIONS

dover311

‘A Hill with a View’ by Zoolon

Just ½ an hour ago I got stopped by a lady in the street who said, “I’m in dire need of puzzles”. True. I had no idea if this was a question or not, so I grinned a hopeless grin and walked on. Ultra odd.

Early hours, Sunday. Creativity, lyric wise – dead. I thought I’d try something new; something different. I picked out a few verses from songs I’d been listening to, then wrote down any random words they prompted. Result = Odd. This is what I got.

LOUD QUESTIONS

‘Yes, I received your letter yesterday, about the time the door knob broke

When you asked me how I was doing, or was that some kind of joke?’

‘Bob Dylan’

What things do you count when you’re alone in my head?

Grey cells, forgotten dreams or just words that I’ve said?

What do you see when you’re behind my eyes?

Black and white and silver grey, or a red green divide?

~

‘I was feeling tired, from the silence and the daily trends

Wanted to feel inspired, from the voices I heard in my head’

‘Lola Marsh’

Mist fell for a cliff edge

A hopeless affair that couldn’t last

Lover’s kiss the rocks below

I should have told them, but they never asked

~

‘Got shackles on, my words are tied, fear can make you compromise

Lights turned up, it’s hard to hide, sometimes I wanna disappear’

‘Foster The People’

Woke up this morning

A song for you inside my head

Reached for the pen and paper

The song was already dead

~

‘In the air, a sea of words, that didn’t come soon enough

In my mind a railway station and a ticket stub’

‘Emmy the Great’

What do you dream of when lying in bed?

Fairy tales, party balloons or a pain in the head?

What will I do if I ever finish this song?

I’ll go searching for the dark place where I long to belong

~

If you’ve not heard of Lola Marsh or Emmy the Great do have a listen.

Time for a song. This one is called ‘Rexie Believes in Magic’. Ever since it got curated this one has had been streamed hundreds of times – thankfully. Hope you enjoy;

Below, my new album, ‘The Forgotten Daughter of Zeus’ plus all the other albums. The downloads are available to buy at £5 – or the equivalent in other currencies worldwide. The complete set of albums i.e. my discography, is £12 the whole set. It/they can be streamed direct from Bandcamp, although for great sound quality the download is best.

‘THE PIGEONS ARE SWITZERLAND’

pigeons coverCover Art by Zoolon

Zoolon’s brand new five track EP was released earlier today.

For this collection of mixed genre songs, I have brought together three lyrical pieces, an instrumental as well as a piece of pure sound art, the latter being the title track, ‘The Pigeons Are Switzerland’. There’s a long story behind that title I’ll share one day.

The opening track ‘Tick Tock’ is a song primarily about violence. It’s followed by my reflective tribute song ‘Francesca’ named after the sublime photographic artist Francesca Woodman who committed suicide in the winter of 1981, aged just 22 years. Her tribute continues with the instrumental ‘Eastside 1981’, a eulogy. ‘What Remains’ is a number about life in general. Lastly, ‘The Pigeons Are Switzerland’, echoes in ‘sound art’ the concept of neutrality.

You can listen to, or buy the easy to download EP at Bandcamp. Included in the download is a PNG file of the lyrics. Enjoy ~ Zoolon

Also, for a heavily discounted price you can buy – if the idea appeals to you – my whole discography from Bandcamp at ZOOLON’S DISCOGRAPHY

BECOMING ZOOLON

george bandcamp1

This ‘something’ was written in March 2016 following an 18-month drought of creativity, triggered by having discovered the crap reality that having a decent degree doesn’t mean you just walk into a half decent job (or any job). I only stumbled on these words the other day tucked inside an old guitar case I keep under the bed. They read a bit juvenile angsty, but when I wrote them I think I was at odds with the world. It was around that time I decided to beat the unforgiving system and become Zoolon.

THE BEAUTY OF THE CHASE

The mixed-up universe inside my head?

Yeah? What of it? And?

I used to keep it under lock and key

It’s full of bright colours, full of alphabets

I know I’ll never read or see

I remember not so long ago

I bought a season ticket to a dark place

Where I lived in a ring of shadow

Where I went missing leaving no trace

Where words and music were under curfew

Where I had no breathing space

Where I discovered the kill could never match

The beauty of the chase

It feels weird reading that one again, anyway, time for some music. Another one from my new album, ‘Rainbows End’. Each track from the album can be downloaded for £1 or the whole ten track album for just £4 (or equivalent in whatever currency you use).  The purchase links follow the song. Anyway, this lively number is called ‘Hooked’.  I hope you enjoy;

LOST HOPES & DREAMS

cyclists dismount

This photo I took the other day, leaves little doubt as to what ‘Kyran’s mum’ – whoever she is – does in her spare time.

Changing the subject, I’ve always thought that you know you’re in trouble when you can’t bend your knees. I was wrong.

On Saturday, I was wearing headphones playing a guitar when the postman called with a parcel. I didn’t hear him ring the doorbell. He left a card saying I could pick up the parcel on Monday from the sorting office.

So, come Monday I’m on my way to the sorting office when in front of me there was a large, short bloke who was walking at a snail’s pace. It was clear to me that he couldn’t bend his knees. In fairness, he must have weighed in at about 30 stone (190 kilogram). There were loads of cars parked kerbside and he was blocking the pavement meaning I couldn’t get by, what with him being so large. Eventually there was a gap wide enough for me to pass.

Next, and by then well ahead of him, I took a shortcut to the High Street, via an alleyway. The thing was, that when I came out the other end, the large bloke was now in front of me. Surreal, impossible even. It’s been nagging at me ever since. He either had a doppelganger (even down to wearing the same clothes) or he was the Usain Bolt of very large, short people who can’t bend their knees. Odd.

Anyway, I’ve been writing a lot of new lyrics and melodies recently. Most are still WIP. As ever with lyrics, most sing better than they read. Here’s one of those.

DEAF EARS

Was it the Season? Was it the Age?

Was it the Master? Was it the Slave?

Who pulled the trigger? Who lit the match?

Who threw the lifeline? What was the catch?

So, the magic of a future, fades away and disappears,

Where there once was laughter, now all that’s left are tears,

And where there once were hopes and dreams, all there is are fears,

Where there once were listeners, words now fall upon deaf ears.

Here’s link to my new album. It costs not much, and is available worldwide.  If you fancy buying it and feel able to post a review on Bandcamp, I’d appreciate it. Also, I’d would like to say a big, big thank you to those who have already purchased a download, or taken time out to listen. It is truly appreciated.

THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY

magpies 1

Every so often news bulletins remind me that I’m right in generally preferring animals over humans. The words below will one day soon be in a song.

The ones who didn’t make it home now bare no malice,

Their graves await them come a new sad dawn,

Those guilty of their murder share the same fate,

Their ticket to a false paradise withdrawn.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly have no answers,

No Gods or Goddesses can light the way,

Murder at the hands of evil demons,

Is the unfair price, The Innocent must pay.

Those who are left behind may weep and stand-alone now,

They’re the ones who’ve lost those they once held dear,

They now know for real there’s such a thing called cruel fate,

That feeds the cancer that’s spread to the liver of a thing called fear.

 ‘Time Out’ is a track from my album ‘Dream Rescuer’. It is the prelude to the track called ‘Pain’. I hope you enjoy it. If you like the song, maybe you’d like to buy the album. It costs just £5 (plus VAT) or the equivalent in whatever currency you use in your country. If you do buy and feel able to post a review on Bandcamp, I’d appreciate it. Here’s the link;
