SINK OR SWIM; SWIM OR SINK

On the horizon just a ‘dot’. In an over full craft refugees risk their lives for a new homeland.
I hope they made it here. A pity I couldn’t get close-ups.

‘Rule Britannia is out of bounds, To my mother, my dog, and clowns’ – Bowie

In seven months their world blew up
In seven days it ends
In seven hours they’ll be nothing left
Not an enemy nor a friend

In seven minutes they’ll sink or swim
Will they live or will they die?
Sink or swim, swim or sink
Will today be their last goodbye?

Shaven heads, beer bellied, white skinned trash
All xenophobes make double sure
“They’ll get no welcome here today
Their skin don’t match our colour”

A sandy beach and safety
Paradise for a lost Syrian
A home bombed flat, no future there
Facing oblivion

The xenophobes don’t give a damn
They can’t see that race hatred’s wrong
They don’t know their ‘ass from a hole in the ground’
A Randy Newman song

The Border Force helicopter spots them. I hope they’re on the refugee’s side.

All goes quiet, for now.

A Zoolon song. A mini protest. I hope you enjoy;

A HAT FULL OF SONGS

I guess like any art form sometimes you have to look back to places where creativity came easy – back to when words and melody were best mates – to when a hat full of songs pretty much created themselves. Looking back at photos of personal memories and things that made you think generally works.

‘The Day After’ by Zoolon

A LIFE – I hope you enjoy;

Misty morning, starless night
E minor clad in grey not white

There are heroes saying nothing
There are angels staying schtum
While out there on the streets you’ll find
The fake immortals and thoughtless dumb

Each statistic, their fault
They take another life
She just lost a husband, He just lost a wife

Each statistic
Another life
Another life…

DECISION NHS

decision

‘The Decision by Dzaet’

The doctor had to make a decision. Would it be the bloke who needed treatment for his cancer or the woman at the wrong end of COVID-19? The hospital was in overflow. Only one of the pair would get any treatment. Only the doctor could choose who.

She needed to think. She went outside the hospital. In the car park she took her last coin out of her pocket. Heads the bloke gets his treatment. Tails the women does. Both patients are 50/50 in terms of surviving. She flips her coin in the air. It lands on the grill of a drain and disappears. Splosh. She doesn’t have another coin.

Who makes the decision?
Who spells out the case
For who dies or who gets cured?
Which one will she erase?

Someone had to be castaway. The doctor’s dilemma. Here’s my song, ‘Castaway’. I hope you enjoy.

8TH MAY 1945

dunkirk

‘CLEVER ARTWORK FROM HUFF POST UK’

This year represents 75 years since WW2 in Europe ended, freedom was restored, fascism was defeated and both my now dead granddads got to get back home to the land they’d left behind. Without those two men I wouldn’t exist.

LET THEIR NAMES BE SHOUTED OUT

Let the ghosts of soldiers travel light
Through the gravestones and the moonless night
Till they make it back to the home they left behind

Let their memory persist
And never be dismissed
The price of freedom never undermined

Let their names be shouted out
From here, there and all throughout
The liberated lands of human kind

Forget them and their history
Then there was no glorious victory
Just wasted tombstones standing in a line

I think I’ll adapt this one into a song. Right now my song ‘All Winter Long’ is the closest to capturing the emotions of dark days left behind. I hope you enjoy;

TWO FACES

All Winter Long Cover

‘China Album Cover’

On the one hand it’s been a good week as I’ve just got my music into China. Hopefully the bespoke for ‘China only’ album ‘All Winter Long’ will be heard there via all the major streaming platforms. That’s the plan anyway. On the other hand, I’ve got the flu and and can’t sing a note right now as my voice sounds like I’ve got a clothes peg attached to my nose plus I could do with a body temp of 37 C/98.6 F again. Anyhow, time for new music words;

TWO FACES
I don’t know the freeway from the forest
Don’t know sunshine from moonlight
I’ve a head full of sand and sawdust
I see no colours, just black and white

Life, you have two faces
You’re a door without a key
Demons & angels trading places
Where nothing comes for free

An open prison I can’t escape from
You’re a thief but you don’t care
You’re an addiction without a needle
So you fix, sometimes you share

I’ll lose my dreams if can’t disguise them
Soon I won’t know tomorrow from today
You’re the god, you are the devil
You’re winter’s midnight midday in May

Talking about the album for China, here’s ‘All Winter Long’ originally from my ‘Rainbows End’ album;

Fancy a ‘Mysterious Grove’? It’s one of my backing tracks but you might find it OK to relax to – hopefully.

And here, one of the other places where ‘Mysterious Groove’ lives and can be downloaded;

THE SEAGULL & THE CROUTONS

seagull2

I’m an idiot for not taking a video of the gull. I’ll tell you why.

For the first day in ages it had stopped raining and was just warm enough for me to have my breakfast outside a café – Eggs Benedict for what it’s worth. Halfway through eating I spotted this gull stood at the door of an estate agent next to the café. At first I thought he (maybe a she, but being a little arrogant I’m thinking a he) was clocking himself in the reflection of the window. However he wasn’t judging his good looks as moments later he was trying to open the door with his beak. When that failed he started to tap at the door – beak taps, that is – trying to get a reaction. Eventually a lady opened the door and gave him a good couple of handfuls of croutons she’d made especially for him.

Apparently the gull visits every single morning at 9.30AM – on the dot – for breakfast and the only reason he had to hang around was that the lady who had fried up the croutons for him had to let them cool down before serving them up. Once he’d scoffed the lot he flew off to wherever gulls go when their not eating or shitting on my car.

While I don’t agree humans should be feeding gulls who really ought to be out at sea fishing for themselves I couldn’t help thinking the interaction between bird and human was OK this time. It’s all about the relationship between a decent human and wildlife to me.

The oddest thing was that when eating the croutons this gull didn’t scream out boasting to all his gull mates that he’d had a result at the estate agents. That’s what usually happens with gulls just before a massive bundle kicks off as they fight to steal each other’s food.

I like seagulls. They’ve got attitude. The rappers of the bird world.

Once, a couple of years ago I was leaving a car park when some heartless moron deliberately drove over a young gull. He flattened the gull then drove off – at speed after spotting me in kill mode. The juvenile gull took a minute or two to die. Sadly I wasn’t brave enough to put it out of its misery. I still feel guilty about that.

I got the reg number of his car, rushed over to the police station but they weren’t bothered. “It’s one for the RSPCA, son,” was all they said. I often think about this. I often think the same thing should happen to that driver. A steam-roller would do nicely.

Here’s ‘Time Out’ my song for the gulls alive and dead from my Dream Rescuer album. I hope you enjoy;

MISS SALLY UMBRELLA

sally umbrella

‘Miss Sally Umbrella’
Artist Unknown – sourced from Pinterest

The day they chopped down the last tree on earth was the day the humans stopped breathing. No oxygen, no humans.

A few of us got lucky. We’d already had our brains transferred to robots. Not just any old robots. Proper human looking robots with eyes that see, ears that hear, mouths that spoke and hands that created things. We didn’t need to eat nor drink. That was useful as there were no farms and no rain. The extra plus was that we robots didn’t need oxygen. That was handy on a planet without any.

My brain settled into its new home without any major problems. A couple of headaches and I’ll admit I missed being not able to watch The Arsenal or have poached eggs. The name the other robots gave me was ‘Zoolon the Musical Android’.  I could still play my electric guitars. Solar power sorted that out.

Being a robot meant I was immortal if I stayed safe and never got myself killed. It also meant that none of us need ever breed. No point in it. We could build new robots but the new ones had no human brains as we’d run out of those. These robots didn’t have feelings and had no creativity but were useful just focused on doing stuff. They mainly built space ships and did the clearing up of desert dust. Music was an alien thing to them.

Everything was going really well for a while. We’d set up camps on Earth, The Moon and on Mars.  Then came a time of conflict. The robots with human brains decided that there wasn’t any reason to keep the robots without human brains. Like they were lesser  beings. Racism had returned to Earth. My hateful lot started to dismantle the robots without human brains forgetting that they had been programmed to defend themselves. They were pretty good at killing their human brain enemies. After a massive battle all that was left was just me and a pile of robot parts of both types. I never took part in the war as I don’t do racism.

However, I’d forgotten about Sally Umbrella, a robot without a human brain. She’d been on Mars at the time of the battle. She was called Sally Umbrella because she always had an umbrella with her. No one knew why because it never rained on Earth any more.

When she got back to Earth I had to tell her what had happened. She wasn’t meant to have emotions but on hearing what I had to say a single tear dripped from her eye. When the tear drop landed, all of a sudden a tiny twig with a single green leaf popped up out of the ground. Seeing I was confused she told me that it was a new born tree. An oak. After that she cried some more and a whole mass of new born trees appeared. She said they’d been ‘hidden beneath’ forever waiting to grow. Two magical things had happened. Sally Umbrella had evolved a brain as good as any human brain plus she had caused the trees to return.

Not long after, some dark clouds turned up. I hadn’t seen any clouds for hundreds of years. Then the rain. Buckets of rain. That’s when Sally Umbrella opened her umbrella to keep us both dry. Maybe she knew something from before? Maybe that was why she carried an umbrella? I never asked.

However, she did ask me if I thought regular humans would evolve again like before. All I could say was, “I hope not.”

Since then 200 million+ years have passed. The forests are back. No sign of humans, although quite a lot of bees. I did see a pretty friendly orangutan in one of the trees yesterday. Sally Umbrella was shaking her head looking ever so worried. I like Sally Umbrella. I think I might write her a song.

Talking of ‘Hidden Beneath’ here’s the piece of music of the same name from my ‘The Forgotten Daughter of Zeus’ album. It’s available to download on  BANDCAMP or to stream on SPOTIFY    I hope you enjoy;

Also try this on for size if you fancy the idea. The ‘Bullish Grove’. Enjoy;

‘THE HOTEL CONFINEMENT’

Portrait of Space

Artwork by Lee Miller- ‘Surrealism’

It was on the BBC News. The story of Bethany. An innocent 17 year old being treated worse than a serial killer held in solitary confinement because in this so called great land the bigwigs haven’t got a compassionate clue what to do to help her.

I won’t rant on and on but below the link to the BBC website. That says pretty much all that needs saying.

BBC BETHANY

FOR BETHANY
Your cell is just 12 by 10
No window, no chair, no stool
No lavatory, no sink, no shower
No nothing that isn’t cruel

It’s two years now you’ve been there
Two years 24/7 alive and on your own
So, you’re different from the others
Stay proud, that’s no reason to lock you up alone

They’ve banged you up in solitary
All you’ve got is a mattress on the floor
As a guest in The Hotel Confinement
You get your food shoved through the door

So what you’ve got anxiety
Autism, maybe more
Not cared for by the untrained staff
They just don’t know the score

We’re out here thinking of you Bethany
I guess we number more than just a few
I hope my words help shame the authorities
Help make them make a proper life for you

I could make a song after playing around with these words but never will without permission. To do otherwise would be wrong. What I really hope is that she, and many others like her who grew up only to be let down, get the result she and they deserve – right now; no excuses. Then it’s hopefully ‘problem over’.

As I’ve not got a bespoke Bethany song, how about me and my guitar? Why not. This one, ‘Aggressive Groove’ from my album ‘Guitar Jam – Volume Two’ on  BANDCAMP  is for Bethany. I hope you enjoy.
