RAINBOWS, HERODOTUS & HANS ZIMMER

herodotusZoolon’s new bin ‘Herodotus the Bin’

Some music. A 60 second guitar improvisation rendition of “Time” by Hans Zimmer. I hope you enjoy;

Other things in my life;

rainbow carpetA few posts back I put up a pic of a what I thought was a lost rainbow on the carpet here at home. Today I find three baby rainbows on the same carpet in the same room. Are they breeding? Am I missing something? Big question.

Next, something else I want answers and solutions for.

tree netting

The Wildlife Aid charity says this netting in Guildford was put in place to stop birds nesting so that the trees can eventually be removed – pic and quote from BBC News

I was watching the news on TV. As I understand it this ‘tree netting’ idea is going on big time all over the country this year. It’s Spring. Birds need nests. A no-brainer. From now to late summer nests are vital. Get rid of the tree nets. If contractors want to kill trees to build houses then at least wait until the birds move on – besides there are thousands of empty shops in High Streets all over the place that could be converted to homes cheaper, quicker and easier than building new homes.

EVERYTHING & NOTHING

Have you heard the word out on the street?

That there’s always a victory in a defeat

Cold comfort on an angry grey cloud day

A sap stained pavement’s tree blood cabaret

Who killed the goose that laid the golden eggs?

Who drunk from The River of Life and left the dregs?

The writings on the wall I hear you say

You must be joking, woodlands never live to fight another day

Can you show me how what you stand for is not a crime?

In words that I can sing that mostly rhyme

I’ll write you a ballad you’ll never get to hear

I’ll click my fingers and make the whole world disappear

Next, ‘A Life’ from my ‘Dream Rescuer’ album. I’ve decided that this number will always be in praise of trees;

RUNNING FROM THE SUN

baby tom

‘A Brand New Tomato Plant’ – A shame I had to be told it was a tomato plant

‘March of The Dead’ – a piece of Sound Art I made using samples and sound manipulation a while back. A bit of dark fun. I miss not having the time to make more of this kind of art. I hope you like it;

THE UGLY & THE POWERFUL

I met a man from Syria

A woman from Lebanon

They’d crossed 1,000 oceans

Running from the sun

Running from oppression

Running from religious hate

Fortune’s wasted on crooked traffickers

Running from a starving state

They turned up in this England

In the hope of charity

Asylum and a place to sleep

Never knowing that could never be

Sure, there are so many

Who care, who act, who try

But the ugly and the powerful

Sit back and watch them die

This song hasn’t had an airing on WP for ages. So, if you’re not familiar with it, or even if you are and just want another listen, here it is, ‘Sunlight & The Dust’ from my Dream Rescuer album. I hope you enjoy;

MUSHROOMS ON MARS

nivelles

‘Hot Chocolate Central’ – Café Culture, Nivelles, Belgium

For reasons I can’t explain I was wondering if mushrooms would grow on Mars. I never did work it out. Probably they don’t, but thinking about Mars I remembered this song I wrote. It’s one of my earlier ones. I last put it on the blog when I started with WP back in late 2016. Since then it’s been curated. It’s never appeared on any of my albums as yet but still gets streamed a lot. Here’s the song and the lyrics so you can sing along if you want. I hope you enjoy;

RED PLANET

Red planet take good care of me

Make it better than before

I’m tired of what we’re doing here

Just show me the door

I think I’ll take that flight – I’ll take that flight to Mars

I’ll leave this Earth behind, won’t even wave goodbye

I know there’s no coming back

Why would I anyway?

There’s nothing left here I want

I know there’s no coming back

Why would I anyway?

There’s nothing left to say

Red planet take good care of me

Make it better than before

I’m tired of what we’re doing here

Just show me the door

I know there’s no coming back

Why would I anyway?

The end game now is playing out

I know there’s no coming back

Why would I anyway?

Here time is running out

On Mars the wind blows hot and cold

On Mars there is no war

On Mars I’ll never have to ask

“What are we fighting for?”

Red planet take good care of me

Make it better than before

I’m tired of what we’re doing here

Just show me the door

Sometime in the future

I might look up to the sky

Back at where I came from

At a planet cold and dry

I think I’ll take that flight; I’ll take that flight to Mars

SACRED HOLLYWOOD

DCIM100MEDIA‘The Way It Is’ by Zoolon

Bored senseless, we roll the dice to see who gets to write the next line. Nothing better to do on the third day in a row of dark skies, Atlantic storms chasing each other through The Channel. Wet and windy. Windy and wet. Here’s what the dice gave us;

SACRED HOLLYWOOD

Blind eyes reading epitaphs

Or just graffiti on a wall?

Or maybe lovers and philosophers

All heading for a fall?

Somewhere in Oblivion

Sisters of Silence breaking bread

A fire raging in the forests of paradise

Hungry orphans left for dead

Dirty bombs and missiles

Every redcoat is fair game

Black or white or in-between

The privileged and the lame

Take my hand, I’ll lead you

To the Queen of Heart’s masked ball

Forget the sleepers sleeping rough tonight

We’ll stay out ‘till curtain call

No stilettos on the cobblestones

Just a refugee chasing fame

Hitching a ride to God knows where

Looking to change her passport and her name

I lost you to a circus clown

While the juggler was at prayer

And as the acrobats on tightropes laughed

At the two left-footed dancing bear

The jailbirds and the wise men

Playing poker in the dark

While in Camelot a jester sings

To a stray dog’s lonesome bark

Pegasus, the slaver’s ship

Amazing Grace, knew it well

Somewhere west of West Africa

In stormy waters, a living hell

Some believe in Arthur

Others in Batman or Robin Hood

The lost souls fed on fake news

Chasing dreams of a sacred Hollywood

Net result? I might have a new song. Weird and odd. I think I’m liking it. Needs playing around with. Needs a chorus. I always write my own stuff. Crap weather changed the rules this one time. A joint effort. Me and Mike Steeden (the old man; my dad) got together and let the dice decide who got to write the next line. He’s good at writing surreal. I gave it my best shot. He tells me when he’s finished what he’s finishing he’ll be back blogging.

Time for some music. Here’s my ‘One Man Band’ song. I have a lyric tailormade for it. The killer is I don’t sing ‘metal’ that well, or not at all. I’ll see how it all evolves. Hope you enjoy;

NO PLACE FOR SHADOWS TO DANCE

DOVER CASTLE (2)‘View from a cliff edge’ by Zoolon

The road leading up the castle is winding and steep. High granite stone walls either side. Some ancient overhanging trees blocking the daylight. No place for shadows to dance.

Most people drive up to the castle. The tourists off the cruise liners from places I’ve never been can afford the entrance fee. A lot of locals can’t. The American’s are enthusiastic tourists. They soak up history and eat cream teas. Most other visitors mainly take selfies and never wonder why.

On my way up I saw last night’s dead badger on the tarmac. Blood and guts. Road kill for the two magpies in love to feed off and live for another day.

In the castle grounds there is a flock of sheep that aren’t like any other sheep I’ve ever seen. Weight issues or maybe just an overload of wool? Unique? Probably not. They look bored most times. Camera shy as well. They don’t hang around in flocks. I like that idea.

On a good day, Calais is clearly visible from up here. On days when the clouds hang low or the sea mist  grows high, you can’t even see the tip of your nose. The tip of my nose doesn’t interest me that much.

Most people forget to look up. iPhones have that effect. If they did look up they’d have seen that the sky was like a half drawn curtain. A hungry sun verses angry grey clouds. A stand-off. A nil-nil draw. No time added-on.

If people did make a habit of looking up they’d see at the very top of the castle, an old keep. A woman in a flowing red dress hangs out there. She doesn’t say a lot. She doesn’t do a lot. Just walks about, fretting and a bit frantic. A damsel in distress? I reckon so. An angry looking bloke dressed as a cavalier just stands there watching her like he’s issued her an ultimatum she’s not good with. They’re both ghosts. No one knows their names. I don’t think they got along then or now. I’ll maybe ask the magpies for their take on what’s going on up there. They’ll know.

Here’s an electronic instrumental I composed a while back. Today it’s for the ghost woman. It’s called ‘A Life’ and it’s from my Dream Rescuer album. I’m guessing the lady in red didn’t get much of a life;

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been reporting on my progress up the ReverbNation charts. I can now add to that. This morning I found out that Zoolon is No. 1 in the UK chart and, amazingly No. 18 in the Global chart – there are 4 million musicians on ReverbNation globally. I’m guessing staying No. 1 will be harder than getting there. As ever, my thanks to all the support I’ve had from you lovely people on WordPress. Thanks again. You’re great ~ Zoolon aka George

  • Checking it out it looks like this is one of the recent numbers that’s helped me along. It’s called ‘Tick Tock’;

The song is from ‘The Pigeons Are Switzerland’ EP which is available to purchase via the link below;

NEVERLAND & THE FERRYMAN

kearsney4‘Prying Eyes’

(if I had been ready a second earlier taking this pic I’d have captured the swans kissing)

100% true.  So, the sun’s out and I’m thinking photographs. I drive out to a place called Kearsney Abbey even though it never was an abbey, just a massive grand old country house that fell apart. I park up, thinking the lake looked a good starting place to take some pics. I’m on my way there when three girls walking the opposite way pass me. I overhear one – she’s wearing a sleeveless t-shirt – say to her mates, “Oh my God, I forgot to trim my pits.” The word, ‘trim’ glued itself to my right ear. ‘Trim’? Did I hear that right? I did.  ‘Shave’, maybe even ‘plait’ at a pinch, but ‘trim’?  What was that all about?  Each to their own I guess.

kearsney2‘Summertime Shadows’

Anyhow, a song in the making – I hope. It’s just in simple verse form right now and for reasons unknown it got darker as the metaphoric ink ran dry. After some playing around with the words it might just find itself a home one day.

DEATH WISH TANGO

A Queen of Hearts, she’s out of it

In the slot machine arcade

The Ace of Spades, he pays the price

Just for getting laid

They dance a death wish tango

To Pan’s solo guitar

Under the fading white light

Of a faraway dying star

The Pan, he’s hiding out in clouds

Not a blessing, more a curse

Oblivious to the Lost Boys news

That things might just get worse

He’s still hanging out in Neverland

Where staying young doesn’t come with any guarantee

And where chasing dreams is just chasing dreams

‘Pan, pay the ferryman, he’ll set you free’

I’ll close this post with a new song, ‘What Remains’. It’s track 4 from my new EP ‘The Pigeons Are Switzerland’. I hope you enjoy;

‘THE PIGEONS ARE SWITZERLAND’

pigeons coverCover Art by Zoolon

Zoolon’s brand new five track EP was released earlier today.

For this collection of mixed genre songs, I have brought together three lyrical pieces, an instrumental as well as a piece of pure sound art, the latter being the title track, ‘The Pigeons Are Switzerland’. There’s a long story behind that title I’ll share one day.

The opening track ‘Tick Tock’ is a song primarily about violence. It’s followed by my reflective tribute song ‘Francesca’ named after the sublime photographic artist Francesca Woodman who committed suicide in the winter of 1981, aged just 22 years. Her tribute continues with the instrumental ‘Eastside 1981’, a eulogy. ‘What Remains’ is a number about life in general. Lastly, ‘The Pigeons Are Switzerland’, echoes in ‘sound art’ the concept of neutrality.

You can listen to, or buy the easy to download EP at Bandcamp. Included in the download is a PNG file of the lyrics. Enjoy ~ Zoolon

Also, for a heavily discounted price you can buy – if the idea appeals to you – my whole discography from Bandcamp at ZOOLON’S DISCOGRAPHY
