A HAT FULL OF SONGS

‘Charleville-Mézières Poster Display’

I guess like any art form sometimes you have to look back to places where creativity came easy – back to when words and melody were best mates – to when a hat full of songs pretty much created themselves. Looking back at photos of personal memories and things that made you think generally works.

Here’s a piano piece from my RAINBOWS END  album. The album is mainly songs with just a couple of instrumentals, of which, the number ‘Castaway’ is one.

I’LL SETTLE FOR ADIEU

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

‘Un jour, je reviendrai’

Living proof a lyricist can get away with murder. Here’s some new words I’ve been playing around with.

Give me an illusion, a multi-coloured fusion
Give me back that sense of deja vu
Give me toast and honey, car keys and loads of money
And a guarantee that when I find you there’s no queue

I don’t need suntan lotion when I’m drowning in an ocean
And you’re dancing on the shoreline, what a view
I’ll take you to Morocco, we’ll dine on coke and taco
If you change your mind will Santiago do?

Although it might sound crazy, the truth is I get lazy
But if I can write you a brand new song I might pull through
If I can’t then I will borrow, an epitaph from tomorrow
And hope you never say au revoir ‘cause I’ll settle for adieu

Keeping up the French theme, a short piece that sounds more French on every replay. I must have been missing the place when I composed this one. I hope you enjoy.

IN PRAISE OF SHADOWS

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

‘The Magic of Shadows Set Free’

Just a song, plus its lyrics, today. It’s called ‘In Praise of Shadows’ and it’s from my first album ‘Dream Rescuer’. I hope you enjoy.

IN PRAISE OF SHADOWS

This is a song for all the shadows
Where the good and the bad both hide
A safe haven for the lost souls
Where no one takes up sides

No colours in my shadow
It just follows me around

No danger in a shadow
It’s as constant as a heart
An island in a sea of light
A restless piece of art

No colours in my shadow
It just follows me around
It never gets to fly away
It’s stuck to me on the ground

DOORWAY TO THE ROOM OF CLOUDS

‘Doorway to The Room of Clouds’

‘One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
I discovered that my castle stands
Upon pillars of salt, and pillars of sand’
Coldplay

I thought I’d try something random again, just writing the first thing/things that came into my head. I’ve not done it for awhile. Here we go – fingers crossed. A letter;

Dear Marie Antoinette aka Miss Misfit,

I painted a portrait of you. In water colours. I got them for next to nothing in a charity shop. I couldn’t afford canvas and oils. It was rubbish. I can’t paint.

It’s cold and rainy today, just like yesterday. Storms from the North Atlantic. I got soaked chasing the rainbows end. I only chased it for the pot of gold. It wasn’t there.

I never did get a replacement dog. Soon maybe. Maybe not. I wonder what happened to your toy spaniel? I never did catch its name.

Will you remember to remember me? Sometimes? Ever? Never?

I’m making a new song. Just for you. It should be finished come December. A ballad. Not quite a ballad. Acoustic, obviously. Minor chords wouldn’t have it any other way. A festive time present you’re too far away to hear. Sound travels only so far. Then it dies. The song hasn’t got a name yet.

I’ll turn this letter into a neat paper dart. I’ll aim it your way. I’m sick of posting things.

This’ll make you laugh. Some types of parking meters fascinate me. The ones that look as though they have a face with eyes, nose and mouth, but no ears. I’ve photographed some. In France, in summer, I took pics of unusual doors. One of them was a door to nowhere. If you’re looking for a metaphor there isn’t one. Not this time.

It’s a shame you talked about cakes when no one knew what cakes were. You caused a revolution. Impressive.

Best Wishes,

Zoolon aka I Hunt-Alone (mostly)

Here’s another track from the new album. It’s called ‘Laid Back Groove – G Minor’. Even though it’s a backing track aimed mainly at other musicians it – and the rest of the numbers – stands alone and is part of that 3 hour/20 track new album, ‘Guitar Jam, Volume 1 – Zoolon Audio Backing Tracks’. I hope you enjoy;

If you’re interested the new album can be downloaded at BANDCAMP   It costs just £6.50 or currency equivalent wherever you live.

MR ANGRY’S PLAYING FIELD

G4 (B&W)‘Hot Day in Berck’

I’ve written a few protest songs before.  Generally mine are not angry songs. It’s not how I’m made. However, this one I’m playing around with is singing well enough, but singing angry. Maybe that’s the way it should be sometimes?

ONE LESS INNOCENT

Guns and souvenirs

No wasted bullets, just wasted tears

As shots ring out the big man sneers

He takes no notice of honest fears

To the refrain of abusive jeers

And poor excuses no one hears

They pull the strings, the puppeteers

The firearm freaks, the profiteers

Cries for help fall on stone deaf ears

Who cares if death finds new frontiers?

Who cares that under a gravestone she premieres

On the ‘One Less Innocent’ stage of slaughtered peers?

Here’s an example of one of my regular style protest songs. This one is from the ‘Dream Rescuer’ album that hopefully makes its point without any anger. It’s called ‘Ticking Clock’. I hope you enjoy;

Stupid things make me laugh. This is a true story. So I’m in the smelly post office. As ever a long queue. The only good thing about being in a queue is you get to listen to people chatting. In front of me two blokes. One says that he’s sick and tired of rowing with his wife all the time. He says to his mate, “I’ve told her time and time again we need to find a level playing field.” His mate agrees and says, “Perhaps you both will find that level playing field when you go on holiday. A break always helps – you know, a change of scenery and all that. Where is it you’re going by the way?” Mr Angry with his wife replies, “We’re hiking up in Welsh mountains’.” His mate says, “Well you ain’t going to find a level playing field up there it’s all hills.” Like I said, stupid things make me laugh.

Finally and probably the best lyric of all time, although you might not agree unless you’re a Gooner like me. An Arsenal classic originally from the Invincible years – before my time sadly – and just perfect after beating Newcastle ‘1 – 0’ in the first match of the new football season last Sunday. Class act.

MAGPIES, FRENCH FRANCE & MUSIC

france24 2019 (5)‘Class Graffiti’

Coming home from Canterbury the other day I saw a squished magpie in the road. Dead obviously. Magpies mate for life. The magpies partner was hanging around confused, flying this way and that, sometimes landing nearby, not convinced his or her partner was dead. I’m guessing the squished one was feeding on carrion because that’s what they do, when it got run over. It looks like the partner will have to feed this year’s clutch in their nest somewhere. Tragic.

Anyway, first some music, my song ‘Rainbows End’. As far as I’m concerned France is a place I’ll always be attracted to however this stupid Brexit pans out. To me it’s a rainbows end. The French do art and passion better than most. This world needs more of that.

Here’s some more pics of things that caught my eye the other week when I was over there. I hope you like.

QUESTIONS I CAN’T ANSWER

george21‘Le Touquet – 2016’

PERHAPS THIS TIME NEXT YEAR

You ask me questions I can’t answer

I write you songs you’ll never hear

Words fading into thin air

Words that die and disappear

In the company of egos

In the places I don’t want to be

I leave when no one’s looking

No goodbyes = no history

Now it’s time for me hideaway

Go on the run to someplace new

Where dreamers get to dream their dreams

Maybe a room without a view

Midnight keeps its secrets

Daylight takes but never shares

Twilight’s just the Devil’s kiss

Only Love’s Shadow cares

You ask me questions I can’t answer

I write you songs you’ll never hear

A promise made, a promise kept

Perhaps this time, next year

The beginning of a song? I never know at this stage, but I hope so.

Time for some music. My ballad ‘Pain – aka Love’s Shadow’ from the Dream Rescuer album.  Hope you enjoy;

TRACEY SEAGULL & A MEMORY STICK

seagull3

‘Tracey the Seagull’ by Zoolon

I met Tracey last week when I was crossing the Channel from Dover to Calais on the way to Dunkirk. When she posed for this photo I had no idea just what a freeloader seagull she was. After the photoshoot, outward bound, just outside of Dover Harbour, Tracey had a bit of a think then had a casual catwalk glide across to the sunny side of the ship and found a spot on the deck rail out of the way of, but still in sight of, human passengers on board. It was there she got herself sat down comfortably and didn’t move a muscle, taking in the rays, until we reached the Port of Calais where she joined Francois the Gull and his pals on a croissant hunt. What a life.

Anyway, I think a memory stick found in a drawer is the modern-day version of dusty old suitcase found in an attic. You take a look inside and find stuff you’d totally forgotten about. I found this, a thing I wrote in 2013 when I was living in a house close to a pebble beach in a road called Canada Road. I forgot I’d ever written it.

NO AUTUMN LEAVES

It’s a shame there’s no trees down on Canada Road

Got no autumn leaves down on Canada Road

You’ll hear the ghosts of Marines, in their infantry greens

Marching to a band down on Canada Road

A young mum pushes a pram down on Canada Road

Her mobile glued to her ear down on Canada Road

The bloke up the ladder, he couldn’t look sadder

Clearing out guttering’s on Canada Road

On Canada Road I see an old man

Outside the chemists, some pills in his hand

He’s swearing at a biker, he thinks Arsenal need a new striker

Down on Canada Road

You can’t be invisible down on Canada Road

Eyes peek from behind curtains on Canada Road

Sally Army and Mormons and some pissed up morons

Doing their thing down on Canada Road

Get salty storms down on Canada Road

You can’t beat the sea breeze down on Canada Road

Except when it blows from the East, it’s one mother of a beast

They say Julius Caesar invaded England down Canada Road

I’m down on my knees down on Canada Road

There’s just you and me down on Canada Road

And some blokes digging holes, stuffing ham and cheese rolls

Repairing a gas leak down Canada Road

It’s a shame there’s no trees down on Canada Road

Got no autumn leaves down on Canada Road

Time for some music. ‘Silent Films’ from my Rainbows End album. Hope you enjoy;

To liven things up a bit, here’s Marina & The Diamonds and their song, ‘Hollywood’. I understand she’s in the studio recording a new album right now.
