SEMI-FINAL TIME & LIVING IN HOPE

ISC 2019ISCSemiFinalist

A few months ago ReverbNation gave me the opportunity to submit a song to the people organising the annual ‘International Song Contest’ in Nashville. I forgot all about it until the news that my number, ‘Devil’s Kiss’ – a ballad featuring the unique Fifi Rong sharing the vocals with me – had been accepted.

Yesterday, I got advised;

Hi George,

Congratulations!

A song that you entered has been selected as a semi-finalist in the 2019 International Songwriting Competition (ISC). We received more than 18,000 entries, so this is a remarkable achievement!

I’ve been told it will be another two weeks or so before I know if I’ve made the finals – that’s left me in ‘I live in hope’ mode. There’s a lot of awards and rewards to be had for those who reach the top of the pile. Also, there’s a whole mass of judges including my favourite band of all time, Coldplay. Time will tell!

Some of you may have heard the song before, some not. Here it is along with the lyrics if you want to sing along. I hope you enjoy;

Devil’s Kiss
You ask the questions I hide from
I write the songs you won’t hear
Leave now in the company of egos
Stay safe where dreamers get to dream

Daylight, midnight, twilight’s just the Devil’s Kiss
Moonlight, sunlight, twilight’s just the Devil’s Kiss
Don’t let the panic start to build
Start to build

You’ve been up on that mountain
Seething – no one left breathing
Don’t let me fade into despair

Daylight, midnight, twilight’s just the Devil’s Kiss
Moonlight, sunlight, twilight’s just the Devil’s Kiss
Moonlight, sunlight, twilight’s just the Devil’s Kiss

I hate photos of me. At times like this the obligatory mug shots shared across this and other platforms I’m told are advisable – accepting that that might not work in my favour! ‘Gulp’ mode!

FRIDAY 13TH – ‘ON THE EDGE’

20191109_110005 (2)

‘Empty Days’

Friday 13th was never going to be a good day. I guess that’s life.

Dark days ahead
Now we’re being led
By the fat cat living dead
So we live in fear instead
For the future just read dread
It’s messed up inside my head
How easy they misled
The gullible overfed
With all the lies they spread
When out to erase all shades of red

Here’s one from my ‘Forgotten Daughter of Zeus’ album. It’s called ‘On The Edge’. I hope you enjoy;

On a happier note it’s always good when one artists credits another for helping out on a new song. That’s what Fifi Rong did for her new number ‘Love is a Lonely Thing – Part 2’. I meant to put this tweet on the blog a few weeks back but stupidly forgot.

Here’s the song itself;

Next is Fifi’s other new song sung in Chinese and called- 出路 (Way Out). A true classic;

ZOOLON ON SALFORD CITY RADIO

salford2

I had a dream of the nightmare kind last night. I dreamed that I couldn’t play the piano anymore. Not good. I was still thinking about that when going through my messages earlier today. Then the day got better. Salford City Radio notified me that my song – the one that featured the unique Fifi Rong – ‘Devil’s Kiss’ would get airplay on one of their shows. Like any other musician I want to get my music heard and this radio station is very well respected having been around for over 12 years. I forgot about the nightmare . Thank you Salford. Thank you, the host Callum Mitchell-Simon who also had some kind words he threw my way.

Anyhow, the message from Callum read, ‘This weeks show features local acts The C33’s / LIINES / The Chief Of Seattle, as well as Elizabeth The Second / Galli / Tetes De Pois / Courtney Barnett / PJ Harvey. Also featuring acts from my current Reverbnation campaign, Pilgrims Dream / Zoolon / Altinak / Michael Baker. Join me every Monday from 9pm at 94.4FM, online, via the TuneIn app and NOWtv’.
Here’s the link – SALFORD CITY RADIO

If you’ve not heard ‘Devil’s Kiss’ before or if you want another listen, here it is. I hope you enjoy;

Here’s a recording of the show. There aren’t any time links but having checked it out ‘Devil’s Kiss’ is about a third of the way in.

SAYING ‘THANK YOU’ TO THE DEVIL

zoolon hands(Me caught on camera making a serious point when talking with The Devil)

I got the notification that read, ‘Chart-Topping Artists – Discover this month’s chart-topping alternative artists now.’ It got better because one of them was me. I’m number 1 on ReverbNation’s UK Chart and have been for a week or so (19th on the Global Chart as well). Maybe I should have been checking the stats daily. Sadly, while I can share on Twitter, there is no way I can embed the ‘Chart-Topping Artists’ playlist on WP – a pain – so here’s the link – REVERBNATION CHART

There’s only six of us on it and the order of play changes all the time, but there’s some great stuff there.

This bit of success is all down to The Devil incarnate himself, through my song, ‘The Devil’s Kiss’ – the one that featured the unique voice of FIFI RONG in a duet – do check her work out when you get a chance. I knew the number got curated not long after it was released and had hoped it would get heard around the world. Odd really because words and melody wise it’s one of my simplest compositions ever. Less is more? Maybe.

Someone told me if I’d released it 20 years ago I’d be rolling in money – which believe me I’m not. These days stats are based on sales + listens + views + etc. What with all the free streaming, indie musicians are having a hard time of it in an industry where 10% of the artists get 90% of the global revenue and that doesn’t leave much in the pot for the rest of us. Even so I’m genuinely pleased about this. It gets the ‘Zoolon’ name/brand out there in front of ReverbNation’s 4 million artists plus any number of listeners worldwide so it’s not all bad.

If you don’t fancy to listening to the whole playlisting then here’s another opportunity to listen to just the Zoolon chart number, ‘The Devil’s Kiss’. I hope you like;

george(Me after The Devil had cracked a joke)

To finish off this post a few Devil prompted dark words and a couple of pics of flowers that caught my eye the other day when I should have been working on the new project. I don’t know why. Like the music, I hope you enjoy;

You climbed the steps up to the alter

Where you gave yourself away

That’s why they call you the Devil’s Daughter

You wouldn’t have it any other way

The writing on the wall says you’re blacklisted

You’re full of promises you know you’ll never keep

You swapped the full moon for a plastic crucifix

Laughed aloud when you saw the one-time preacher weep

NB – Where do words come from? I only mention it because of the line, ‘You swapped the full moon for a plastic crucifix’. I’m not saying it’s a great line, more that I never realized I’d written it until I read it back. Odd.

10 DAYS AWAY

the nothing4‘The End of The Beginning’ by Zoolon

In a few hours’ time my acoustic and me are off to the middle of nowhere for 10 days. No internet access unless I can manage to take my mobile into a town or city. How surreal is that? No social media.

Also, it maybe the last time I get to have free movement across European borders. Soon the nasty UK brigade will ruin everything.  Anyway, I’m sorry to be missing your posts for those 10 days.

For now, a few random bits and pieces you might enjoy. First, my most popular song if stats are anything to go by ‘Sunlight & The Dust’

Although I ought to add that  ‘Devils Kiss’  featuring a duet with Fifi Rong is catching up at a rate of knots.

Next, a vid from two years back of me mucking about with guitars;

Lastly, a piece of classical music electronic style called ‘Barbed Wire’. It reminds me of ‘borders’;

SIT UP & SMILE

pride and time1 (2)

I was lucky to get hold of these two stone pieces the other day. The pic doesn’t do them justice. They’re much bigger than they look here and weigh a ton. The best part was that they cost me next to nothing. Happy days – I like them, I just don’t know exactly why although I am hoping that they sit up and smile sometimes letting me know when they like my music – like a barometer lets you know changes in the weather. I’ve named them Lana and Imogen after two artists I respect. They do add a bit of art to an otherwise dull area. I keep them on the floor in the middle of the attic studio. I’ve only tripped over them one time so far.

Another song from the new ‘Devil’s Kiss’ album. This one is called ‘Shadow On The Wall’, a remake of a demo I made a while back. I’d been under pressure to re-record and produce a proper version for some time. Here it is. I hope you enjoy;

THE UNIQUE FIFI RONG

fifi2

Every so often on social media we bump into a special talent. In the case of Fifi Rong a very special talent who hasn’t gone the generic route. I’d like to thank her for agreeing to let me run this feature on my blog.

This short extract from her bio paints a picture of where she’s at; ‘Fifi Rong is a London-based vocalist, songwriter and electronic music producer. A ground-breaking artist, she is the first to succeed in organically integrating Chinese influences into western popular music, gliding effortlessly across an eclectic range of contemporary genres. Her trademark hybrid sound is a seamless blend of Pop, Electronica, Alternative R&B, Avant-garde and UK Bass music, accentuating her unmistakably melancholic and sensual vocals.’

I’ll let her art speak for itself. Usually at this stage I say, ‘I hope you enjoy’. In this case I don’t think Fifi needs the word ‘hope’. First the vid for the song ‘The Sin City’;

I’m still working my way through Fifi’s music. I keep going back to the three section piece ‘Red Moon Voyage’. To me it defines the art of music;
