A NEW MOON NEVER LIES

hythe4

A Zoolon aside: I took a few pics of the Royal Military Canal running through the town of Hythe just up the coast from me the other day. I’d often wondered what the purpose of the canal was/is. I checked out its history. It runs 28 miles more or less parallel to the sea and was built as a defence against invasion during the Napoleonic Wars with France (1793 – 1815). Work started on 30 October 1804. Digging took just 22 months but the canal was not finished and ready for service until 1812. By then the French Navy had been defeated at the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) and there was no longer any threat of invasion – which makes it a bit pointless, yet not totally pointless as the canal is now a great habitat for wildlife especially in summer when it comes alive with patrolling dragonflies, noisy Marsh Frogs and Kingfishers – not that I saw any that day.

There’s a new star in the heavens
I saw her with my two eyes
She’s going to outdo Mars and Jupiter
That comes as no surprise

hythe3

When you look up at the night sky
You’ll see she’s wearing a flower disguise
That’s what the new moon told me
And a new moon never lies

‘A New Star in the Sky’

If she’ll have me, one day I’ll travel with her
Give Earth my last goodbyes
Seeking sanctuary like a refugee
In a new land, a new sunrise

DOVER CASTLE (2)

‘Castle on the Cliffs’

Today I’m running with samples of music matched with scenes from my home town. The music is taken from Volumes 1 & 2 of my Guitar Jam Backing Tracks albums, each album running for around 3 hours. You don’t have to be a musician to get something out of these tracks because they cover a whole mass of different moods to write or think by as well. You can download these albums for a small fee at BANDCAMP

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy this selection of instrumentals and photos.

EMPTY STREETS & EMPTY ARMCHAIRS

rush hour

‘Rush Hour – Tuesday Morning 9AM’

The line, ‘Rainbow’s End stay a secret, for forever and a day’ was the line that my song Rainbow’s End was built around. Folklore has it that at the end of the rainbow there’s a pot of gold and an enchanted magical land where all your dreams come true. No one’s ever found the end of a rainbow. If dreams came true there now would be a good time to discover it – or would it just become victim to human greed?

Even though I’ve posted this song, ‘Rainbow’s End’ on the blog before, there’s no harm in running with it again. A download of the album by the same name is available on BANDCAMP

EMPTY
Every day a locked down deadpan Sunday
Every day a mountain never climbed
Every day a postcard never posted
Every day heartbeats that never rhymed

Maybe June, July or maybe never
My guitar the only living thing that doesn’t care
A window’s view, an empty still frame
No face to face, just an online love affair

Empty streets and empty armchairs
Empty funerals for those already dead
Empty songs sung with no one listening
Empty graves, empty love and empty heads

JUMP THE QUEUE

DCIM100MEDIA

‘Waiting, watching’

For my ambient, dark piece, ‘The Forgotten Daughter of Zeus’ as of now read, ‘The Forgotten Cheated Souls’. The more I hear about the greedy idiots who are stockpiling food while, for example, NHS staff don’t get a look in when it comes to visiting a supermarket after a long shift is over the more I angry I get. My music and words below.

Where have all the humans gone
Now the empty shelves, they have no worth?
Are they hiding in the shadows
Or still suffocating mother earth?

They’ll pay the price for selfishness
It’ll cost more than they think
Storing, hoarding, stockpiling
While the hungry poor die in a blink

Sharing nothing, taking everything
They get fat while others starve
No chance of them handing back
The last pig on earth they’ll cook and carve

It’s said time and tide waits for no one
I don’t believe those words are true
Time and tide always form a straight line
While uncharitable humans jump the queue

A CAT IN SYRIA

folkestoneinfeb28022020 (2)

9am – Saturday’s early morning clouds dish out a warning that a better than average, but not all that when it comes to serious storms, Storm Jorge is on his way (you can just see the coast of France on the horizon – in sunshine! – if you look hard enough)

dover10

10am – Yesterdays death wish puddle gets revived courtesy of a bored dark cloud with nothing better to do than rain some more in the company of his new best friend, ‘a useful blocked drain.’

puddle

Midday – Teeming rain gets me and my carton of porridge oats plus a pain de raison – I was particularly looking forward to – totally soaked and inedible. Maybe I should have bought something in a tin.

doverfire5

2pm – The sun says a quick ‘hello’, checks for rainbows that aren’t there, before giving up on Earth as a lost cause. He heads off to The Dark Side of The Moon as she never calls him a total waste of ‘Space’.

doverfire3

6pm – An empty underpass where the old bloke who owns a harmonica but can’t get any sort of tune out of it usually hangs out. No one’s seen him for awhile. I heard that the cash rich tourists coming off the cruise liners in the harbour didn’t like walking past him as they made their way into town.

doverfire4 (2)

7pm – A great night for freezing to death, crossing roads and unwittingly posing for a pointless random photo I was taking.

doverfire2 (2)

8pm – Time to traumatize the pigeons, gulls, cats and dogs with the pointless sounds of exploding fireworks the cruise liners think are OK. That got me thinking I wouldn’t like to be ‘A Cat in Syria’ right now. I might use that as a title for an appropriate new classical piece one day.

Here’s an experimental piece of sound art I wrote a while back. It’s called ‘World of Shadows’, although if I was giving it its title today I think I’d have called it, ‘Land of Shadows’. I hope you enjoy;

THE MUSICIAN’S CURSE

cyclists dismount

‘Following on from the graffiti blog post of last week here’s another similar – except  it’s artistically rubbish – pic. This one got a few laughs doing the family and friends rounds a while back. If you check out the ‘Cyclists Dismount’ sign you’ll see why. It doesn’t say a lot for Kyran’s mum, whoever she might be.’

Going through my unused skeleton lyrics from 2012 that I’d discovered on yet another long forgotten external hard drive I found this one. Did I really write that? Guess I must have. Talk about teenage angst!

My past is in my pocket
My future in my hands?
I’ve thrown away the worry beads
The old dreams and other plans

Lost myself to the bogeyman
Visiting tomorrow’s new dark place
Couldn’t find the exit door
Got lost without a trace

Save your pointless prayers for others
Don’t waste your time on me
I’ve got no need for divine words
Besides, blind faith’s a mystery
A mystery to me

They say there’s beauty in my mind’s eye
No one ever gets to see
Since moving on means turning back
Since the sound of music set me free

Time for music. First, my number ‘Sunlight & The Dust’ for no other reason than it jumped the thousand streams hurdle on ReverbNation last week. Apparently that’s rare’ish on that platform. It’s a shame I haven’t got the same stat on SPOTIFY – then again I only joined them recently;

Lastly, a guitar jam backing track – Punk Pop Groove – that works as something to listen and maybe write to. I hope you enjoy;

THE LADY WHO SPEAKS OF INTERESTING THINGS

moon (2)

‘Earlier That Night’ – adapted from a photo by Christian Lagereek

Why me? I couldn’t work out what was happening at first. The sky looked weird. There’s not too much light pollution on the coast yet this night the sky had no flickering stars nor the black blanket the stars take a rest on. It wasn’t sea mist, clouds or fog either. It was big and getting bigger all the time. It didn’t take long before it filled the sky with somethingness. Only then did I work it out. The moon had decided to crash into the earth and there was nothing I could do about it.

All around me, people not looking up. Happy smiling people without a clue what was about to happen. I tried to tell them but although my mouth mimed the words the words weren’t coming out. Fear and anger. Anger and fear.

Soon I could see not just the outlines of the moon’s craters like you would with a telescope. This time I could see them clearly, like people on holiday flying over the Grand Canyon, except that I was looking up while they’d be looking down. I figured I had about five minutes to live. The bloke on his mountain bike who passed by didn’t have a clue, nor the group of girls sat on the bench eating their takeaway something. It was probably for the best they weren’t looking up. That way they’d die without having to get stressed about it.

Then I remembered that the lady from Vladivostok who always speaks of interesting things was arriving later to cut my hair. That’s when I woke up.

Here’s both the lyric & the song, ‘Ticking Clock’. I hope you enjoy;
In this land
The sky only knows
How to rain and how to hide us from the sun
The ticking clock
Stuck in reverse
They lead us all backwards to when time had just begun
Pretending all along they had a plan a morale plan
The chatter of the mindless now has made this mess
Made this mess

In this place
Threats turn to war
Bombs and poor excuses feed the starving hawk
The ticking clock
Stuck in reverse
Can we leave these leaders fighting on their own?

SNOWFLAKES AND FIRE

white1

‘The Sea Puts on a Show For Free’

I was fighting with insomnia when I wrote this. Couldn’t sleep. It didn’t help that The Arsenal had lost to the Chavs in a game we deserved to win. It’s at times like these words choose themselves and I keep out of their way.

The death toll is rising
Snowflakes and fire
In the tent of the future
We planned to conspire

You gave me a smile
I got lost in a dream
I haven’t got answers
You haven’t a scheme

One day on the top of death’s channel
We looked down at the ocean’s floor
And like the dying native American
You shouted out, ‘You know, there is so much more’

Holding hands as we jumped from the cliff edge
Down to the still water below
We made sure to remember what the dying man said
‘After fire there is always snow’

Here’s a number from Volume One of my Backing Track collection. It’s called a ‘DIRTY ROCK GROOVE’ – IN A MAJOR’. You’ll find them all at MY YOUTUBE CHANNEL   I hope you enjoy;

‘On The Outside Looking In – A Travel Agent’s Shop Window’

It’s Christmas any day now. Stating the obvious, this year is nearly over. Time to give my head a break for a few days. I’ll catch up with you all soon.

The main thing is that I’d like to thank all of you for your support this year. It’s meant a lot and helped inspire me on those days when the music goes into hiding and the words just won’t arrive. Also to those who have bought my albums, merchandise and ‘poem to song’ product, a major thank you. Importantly I want to say Happy Christmas to everyone. Have a good one. Here’s a few words of hope for 2020.

WE SURVIVED
Don’t matter who or what you are
When we all eat and sleep on the same dying star
It’s no one else’s business if you’re a believer or you’re not
Face it – this abused planet is all that we’ve got

It’s Christmas once again, a time of peace
So let the fighting and all the pointless hatred cease
There are no border lines to cross to make it so
Give back to Planet Earth all that we must owe

Here in the West I play my guitar
Over in the East she plays sitar
All around the world we play on rusty tins and violins
If we don’t play the melody together no one wins

Tomorrow is too late when there’s today
Let’s get our act together – no delay
Our last chance to scroll back time has now arrived
In the end we need to say, ‘we did it, we survived’

‘Thinking’ Mugshot

I think 2019 has been my most creative year yet. In January I released the instrumental album ‘The Forgotten Daughter of Zeus’, then come May there was the ‘Devil’s Kiss’ EP. On top of that in September and October I managed two 4 hour long ‘backing track’ albums. Although the backing tracks are mainly aimed at other musicians they work for anyone looking out for background music while they work, read or whatever else they might be doing (like cooking a festive feast).

Anyhow, with the new year on the way I thought if any of you out there want to listen to my collection of 2019 music then below, the links to stream each album. I hope you enjoy;

ME & MY GUN

butterfly by iced-blackberryArtist ‘Iced-Blackberry’ 2012

There’s an annoying Christmas ad on TV that has a melody I don’t particularly like yet it’s one of those songs that get inside your head. Christmas songs on ads are often like it. I call them creativity destroyers. I checked out the one that was killing my creativity. It’s a song called ‘Little Drummer Boy’. You may know it. In the lyric there’s a lot of repetition based on the noise that goes ‘…pa rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum rum pum pum pum, Shall I play for you? pa rum pum pum pum on my drum?…’ The thing is the last bit ‘on my drum’ was making my brain subconsciously say, “give it an update”. Not only have I got a tune I don’t like playing on a loop inside my head but I now have an update phrase I threw into the mix. For ‘On my drum’ read ‘Me & My Gun’. Try it out for size. It fits. At least I got something to write about out of the torture. I have to add that even if they were legal in the UK there’s no way I would ever have a gun.

ME & MY GUN
Me and my gun are going to change the world
Instead of bullets we use butterflies
Me and my gun at your temple
Will be a neat surprise

Me and my gun won’t kill you
We’re not out to shoot you dead
Me and my gun aim to save the planet
At least that’s what the butterflies have said

Some music from my YouTube. This one is an ‘E Minor Emotional Groove’. I hope you enjoy;

Lastly, it’s funny how I can get things wrong. In summer 2018 I took a pic outside a restaurant in Brussels. A few days back I was going through the WP Reader and saw what I thought was my pic. It was as good as identical to mine. Paranoia when I saw the credit was down to someone else. Thankfully I got it so wrong. We’d both simply taken a photo of the same scene. Here it is;
