LEAVING CAMELOT

george 4 (2)

(me in the days before I morphed into a frozen statue outside a pet shop in the High Street)

LEAVING CAMELOT

My past is in my pocket

My future still in my hands

I’ve thrown Excalibur into deep waters

I’ll settle for time’s shifting sands

Save your prayers for the others

Don’t kill time waiting on me

I don’t need your wasted words

I don’t need them, let it be

I’ve spent too long in the shadow of King Arthur

I’m sick and tired of playing the part of Lancelot

When all I ever needed, was my guitar and any song

‘Goodbye, farewell’ I’m leaving Camelot

I’ll try and forget how cold it is outside. A good time for a song about dreams, ‘Dream Rescuer’ by Zoolon aka George;

Next a song, ‘At the end of the Day’ by Amon Tobin from the truly amazing sound art album ‘Foley Room’;

WHERE HAVE ALL THE RAINBOWS GONE?

george folkestone (2)

(Above, me having a think about lost rainbows, all the time taking care not to fall off the edge of the cliff into a watery grave)

WHERE HAVE ALL THE RAINBOWS GONE?

On the day the Ice Caps melted

The sun swallowed a swollen sea

No rain from Africa to Eurasia

No springtime blossom on the Cherry Tree

The wheat, the maize, the grains dried and died

No more the rainforest of the Amazon

The last human left alive looks up

Says, ‘Where have all the rainbows gone?’

My song is not a warning

Believe it, it’s far too late

Mankind’s ways of greed and war

Has defined Mankind’s death wish fate

Rainbow’s End will stay a secret

For forever and a day

“Where have all the rainbows gone?”

The last thing the last human will get to say

Time for something a little brighter; something with ‘magic’ in it – my song ‘Rexie Believes in Magic’. I hope you like it;

Next the genius that is Agnes Obel with her song ‘Riverside’.  The mood of the piano is a work of art in itself;

A POSTCARD FROM BEFORE

zoolon

(me having a laugh with my GoPro)

I’ve been mucking about with new lyrics/melodies lately. Some are working; some I let fly away back where they came from. For random reasons I’ll probably never figure out, history has been on my mind – perhaps the flavour of French history from last week has stayed with me? Anyway, it’s the small pieces of history that never made the history books that fascinates me. The song I’m working on presently, ‘A Postcard from Before’ is themed on the people who never got talked about much from back in the dark days of WW2. Somewhere down the line, when I get my act together this may appear on a new album as a whole song. I hope so.

A POSTCARD FROM BEFORE (extract from a new song)

I found a bent and buckled postcard date-stamped 8th May 1944,

Sent back home to England to an address that is no more,

I couldn’t make out the signature, just the words, “What are we fighting for?’

I love you, I’ll be back home soon, after this nightmare of a war”

I wondered if he made it home, if he managed to get out alive,

Or in a battle on the frontline some place, maybe he didn’t survive?

And at the house that’s now demolished, did she wait in hope he would arrive,

In hope that come the peacetime, they had a love story to revive

I’ll sing a song of hope for them,

Even though they’re now no longer here,

I’ll sing a song of hope for them,

I’ll sing a song of hope for them,

I’ll sing a song of hope for them,

Won’t let their memory just disappear.

Here’s a piece of music, an older number I wrote a while back, ‘Rebirth’ to accompany the words. A substitute piece of music I know, but the sentiment feels right. Hope you like it;

PAIN (aka LOVE’S SHADOW)

george folkestone (2)

I think every album is allowed one simple acoustic number, so long as the lyric has a true meaning. This song called ‘Pain’ from my ‘Dream Rescuer’ album has a lyric that is personal to me and has such a true meaning. Written it just a few moments on a day I’ll always remember. It sat in the locker for three years until it decided it was ready to be aired. I hope you like it.

The nights are getting longer

Your days are drawing in

You lost the dice roll this time

In a game you could never win

Guilt is loves shadow yet we never forget

From the corner of my eye your silhouette

It was your time and my tears feel like rain

I traded my grief to end all your pain

The game is now over

I’m glad that we played

The wounded heart full of sorrow

Nothing betrayed

Now its official

Now it’s no dream

Always remember nothing is as it seems

It was your time

This short songs for you

To help ease this

Pain

If you like the song, maybe you’d like to buy the album. You can listen to the whole album without charge at;

‘REXIE BELIEVES IN MAGIC’

Another song from my new album, ‘DREAM RESCUER’. This one is called ‘REXIE BELIEVES IN MAGIC’. Here’s the lyric in case you fancy singing along. I hope you enjoy;

Rexie believes in magic

Has done all along

Shipwrecked and nowhere else to go

Its time he learns to head back home

Rexie believes in magic

Has done all along

Streetwise, believes in love and fate

Still searching for his only song

Rexie sits alone

Its getting darker…

Shipwrecked and nowhere else to go

He dreams of home

And the girl he loves the most

With the girl he loves the most

Rexie believes in magic

Has done all along

Shipwrecked and nowhere else to go

He dreams of home

And the girl he loves the most

A POEM BECOMES A LYRIC

Here’s a track from my new album, ‘Dream Rescuer’. The song is called ‘Sunlight & The Dust” and is adapted from a poem by my father, Mike Steeden.  I’ve never used the words of others when composing before, yet I thought this poem would not find the journey to the Land of Lyrics too troublesome. I hope you like it. The album itself you can find on Bandcamp, where you can listen for free, yet if you find you like what you hear, then the option to buy is available.

TRADING INSULTS

hands3

(a statue I spotted along West Cliff, Ramsgate – for reasons unknown, it seems to fit my song posted below)

As I understand it the 38th parallel is the dividing line between North and South Korea. I think it was about 4 years ago when the North were talking about how close they were to building a missile that could take out cities on the east coast of the US. The news worried me and a lot of others at the time. It was as clear to me then as it is now that if they did that, the US would bomb them flat in retaliation, and if that happened it would be the end of the world as we know it.

Watching the news bulletins right now it seems that it wouldn’t take more than a cross word here and a funny look there for this whole bombing scenario to kick-off WW3. Worrying in the extreme.

I’m a simple pacifist, who understands just one thing. The only peaceful solution to any dispute is to be had when the two sides sit down and talk to each other. Maybe I’m naïve, but as of now that is what I believe they should be doing. Trading insults is pathetic.

I originally posted this song – one I wrote about the North Korean ‘threat’ 4 years ago – around the time I started blogging. It seems relevant again right now – perhaps more so than before. It is an experimental number that doesn’t take sides. It just focuses in a surreal way on how this thing could pan out if the relationship between nations goes pear-shaped. It’s called ‘Erasing the 38th. If you’ve not heard it before please have a listen.

THE DREAM RESCUER

dover france

(The coast of France seen from Dover Harbour, England a couple of days ago. It was hard keeping the camera still in the wind hence the focus is a bit like it)

THE DREAM RESCUER

You rescued dreams and nightmare’s schemes,

Spinning around inside your head,

You kept them in your diary,

A book you said you never read,

Come morning, come broad daylight,

At rainbows end you wept,

Was it the red fox, or the Bengal tiger,

Who stole the dreams you’d kept?

Frozen words and red balloons,

Evaporating in thin air,

Lost in time, not kissed goodbye,

The dream you dared to dare.

Someone with loads more brain cells than I’ll ever have told me that she didn’t mind me working with the prompt she inspired, namely the title ‘The Dream Rescuer’.  I hope there’s a song to come out of this one day soon.

Time for a song? Why not. This one is called ‘Rebirth’ and I made this a while ago, in just a few days using my Ableton push and guitar after suffering a year and a half of block on the composition front. If I was writing it again it might turn out a little different but that didn’t matter at the time, I was just pleased to have written something, anything. This one means a lot to me in that it gave way to a new dawn; a better place. Hope you enjoy.
