BROKEN GLASS

There are no hero’s out tonight, the last one took the late night flight
Above the clouds, under the moon, and down below the next typhoon

Tomorrow’s not another day, tomorrow I start again – OK?
I dreamed of some place far away, where time stands still and echoes betray

What’s not made of hate is beautiful, what’s made of love is often cruel
I don’t need this hassle anymore, locked in behind an unlocked door

In the shadows of last year’s sad song, I wondered where it all went wrong
It’s easy when with words unsaid, on broken glass, barefoot I tread

A CONCRETE FOREST ACROSS AN OCEAN

‘The Forest of Dreams’

Walking in the middle of the forest, taking a few pics along the way, I looked up, saw a buzzard preparing to swoop down on his prey. Nature at work. Then later, thinking about racist humans at work, I couldn’t help but compare the two.

Up above the buzzards’ waiting
Singing ‘kee-yaa’ for his new love
Down below the farm and woodland
Down below the fledgling dove

He had no choice, no time to play mind games
He’ll take what he can get
Survival of the fittest means
He kills with no regret

Paradise is where the birds sing
In the trees and in the sky
Life’s a race to beat the seasons
Or else his nestlings, they will die

In a concrete forest across an ocean
A white cop kills – a black man’s dead
The police ignore his plea for mercy
“I can’t breathe” was all he said

Equality should be in our DNA
No more poor excuses nor stupid chatter
Law makers and law enforcers
Go prove that ‘Black Lives Matter’

DEAD DAYS, NEW IDEAS

What does a musician do when the virus has caused the market to be as good as dead? In my case it’s about thinking of other ways of using my music in a way that has a purpose. In this case a marketing purpose – a promo video with backing music for authors.

Better put, a creative marketing video for authors about to launch their new book, or wish to give a bit of extra oomph to a book they already have out there. For example, the one below I made for MIKE STEEDEN’S latest book.

Basically, all I need from an author is the book front cover and a script, say, of the book’s blurb along with audio, chosen by the author, in the form of a song or instrumental from my easy to access portfolio on BANDCAMP – all I’ll need is the song title. This way you don’t have to go paying a fortune for use of a musician’s copyright as you would if, say, you wanted background music from someone you’ve heard on Spotify or such like.

Anyhow, from that collection of book cover, author’s words and my music I can put the lot together into a video for just £35. Should an author want an original instrumental to match the mood of the book and own that piece of music for themselves then the fee is £100 simply because I’d have to compose, produce and mix and the masterpiece.

THE ‘ONCE UPON A TIME’ CHAIR

‘The Sorcerer’s Hiding Place’

Now it’s legal to escape the front door I thought I’d give it a try. I wasn’t sure if it would end up a brain dead experience or a walk in the path of pollen and disease. As it happened I came across the ‘Once Upon a Time’ Chair – see photo further down. I found myself thinking it should maybe be better named the ‘One At a Time’ Chair.

The place I visited is called The Leas, it’s got pine avenues, formal gardens and flowers blooming all year – plus it’s right next to the sea. It was OK.

CANDY FLOSS EQUATIONS

I know these times aren’t for joking, and I mean no harm, but check out the place of origin of my American Fender Telecaster above. I’ve tried playing with gloves on but it’s not the same.

Anyway, here’s my dig at politicians worldwide. I might get a song out of it one day. It’s called ‘Candy Floss Equations’.

CANDY FLOSS EQUATIONS

Ever since the railways crossed the borders
Ever since the mountains touched the sky
Ever since the moon gave up on caring about the tides
Politicians have swapped each truth for another lie

No surprise their candy floss equations
No surprise when self is put before mankind
No surprise the toffee apple false assurances
When their forever promises go unsigned

Protesters, demonstrators, they get locked up
For shouting loud the honest facts of days to come
Deceitful politicians sit back and claim a triumph
When the riot squad have their opponents on the run

Democracy needs to have a blood transfusion
Democracy is dying on its feet
Democracy means nothing to neo-fascists
Claiming power, never accepting a ballet box defeat

When you own the press, the TV News, the money makers
When you own the generals, law makers and Twitter for trading lies
Then power begets power begets power
And you become a corrupt dictator in disguise

Time for music. This one goes by the name ‘Classic Rock Grove – E Major (Guitar Jam Backing Track). Even though it’s a backing track, these groves make for OK background music. I hope you enjoy;

GEETHA’S NEW SONG

Once more I’ve had the privilege of working with Geetha Prod’hom, the talented lady of more artistic skills and genres than I could ever count, per my product, POETRY TO SONG

This time her brand new song, ‘I Wanna Be With You’. To say I had magic words to work with, an understatement.

I don’t think I need say anymore. Her words (words that have that rare special feeling); her song, speaks for itself. Thanks for the opportunity to have worked with you, Geetha.

JUST HEART TO HEART

‘Just Heart to Heart’, a second commission per my POETRY TO SONG product, from the talented lady of many skills, working across any number of genres, who goes by the name Geetha Prod’hom.

Sometimes, when working on a new song, the words get to speak aloud, telling me they want to be dressed in the music rather than share the stage. This was one of those. After a chat, the words and me settled on a cloak with an orchestral pattern. They’re rare things and I think that’s why I enjoyed the project like I did. Geetha certainly has a strong relationship with her words. Here’s the new song that now belongs to Geetha. I hope you enjoy.

That’s not all. When Geetha posts on her blog, you don’t just get the words, you also find she adds audio readings. I’ve chosen two examples here – in fairness I was spoiled for choice. DO YOU SEE

My post today is about Geetha Prod’hom, the only female from Geneva, Switzerland, playing chess in the grandmasters’ category. On top of that, Geetha is a lady of many skills. In her own words, and taken from her ABOUT page on WP, “Born of an Indian father and a Tunisian mother, I have grown up into a multicultural background. I love art in all its forms and like painting and drawing. Sometimes I also choose to express myself in words through poems in some of the languages I learnt throughout my life. I write poems mainly in English, French and Arabic.” I nearly forgot to add, she is also a healer.

I have had the privilege of being commissioned by Geetha to turn a traditional non-rhyming, most excellent poem, into song, per my product POETRY TO SONG . Here is the outcome. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when adapting to song her wonderful poem – as is always the case when one genre blends with another – in order that the words get to sit comfortably with melody. The final result, a song that belongs to Geetha.

There was something else that caught my eye in Geeta’s ABOUT page. This is what she says, “I write because I mainly see beauty in the world and it touches me so much that I wish to express the feelings it generates but I also write from experiences I have gone through and ugly happenings I have witnessed for others and that too generates its own set of emotions which I then try to release through the same medium. I hope this blog brings a blend of all of this to those who wish to read it so that they may see the beauty and revel in it as well as see the ugliness and give some thought to what creates it.”

MELISSA CRIES FOR CANDY

‘I risked a pollen attack and a bout of hay-fever in the back bee friendly garden for this. Why?’

Like last week another older song, not yet to appear on an album. Recorded back in 2014 in a lonely bedroom one dark night, a song about day to day life. Lyrics first, the song itself follows on behind along with a pic of my unusual meal (Why+1?)

Storm clouds on the horizon
No red sky tonight
The wind blows away the magic
Of a starry, starry night

Melissa cries for Candy
Candy dreams of John
John is suicidal
On how it all went wrong

Larry plays the old guitar
Kate the mandolin
And Finn plays the accordion
They’re busking in Berlin

It’s a game of names and fortunes
A game played out in time
A game of life that ends in death
A mountain we must climb

And John’s looking out for Sally
Candy’s dreaming on
Melissa took an overdose
She does not belong here

Larry plays the old guitar
Kate the mandolin
And Finn plays the accordion
They’re busking in Berlin

Candy is the blinkered one
John has the broken heart
Larry’s getting on with life
Melissa fell apart – she fell apart, she fell apart

Finn, she won a battle
Kate, she lost a war
Candy is still dreaming of
What are we fighting for?
