PIGEONS, SHADOWS & GRAFFITI

An ambient piece I composed last year, the title track on the album,‘The Pigeons Are Switzerland’

Ever since I posted some photos of graffiti the other week its been nagging at me that I had older, better photos filed somewhere. I finally found them on yet another forgotten external hard drive.  These ones are from four years ago when a cough was just a cough.

Here’s my gentle song, ‘In Praise Of Shadows’. Staying indoors right now means missing out on the natural shadows created by The Sun, for awhile. Again, I hope you enjoy;

COUNTING STARS

charleville-2015

‘Those Who Stayed Behind’

One time on a moonlit night
You sat there counting stars
Asked me how it was that heaven
Was on the other side of Mars

Darkness, I can’t do without you
Self-doubt, that’s much the same
I’ve lost myself inside of Pan’s shadow
A place where life is just another pointless game

Cut it and the world cuts it with you
Crash then they’ll never know who you are
Hang around in twilight’s embers
And you’re just another abandoned star

You can hear me but you’ll never see me
In those shadows I’ve a bit part in a film noir
Listen out for the sad chords I’m playing
Listen out for my best friend, my new guitar

A song still waiting for its place on an album. I can’t believe that I wrote this number 6 years ago. Time plays tricks on me. Some of you might have heard it before, but it hasn’t had an outing for ages. New songs are on their way, but for now ‘Busking in Berlin’, a song about interrelationships between members of a band of buskers. I hope you enjoy;

JUST THE MIRROR PLAYING GAMES

zoolon1

‘Come a Frozen Morning’

How do you write over-the-top surreal lyrics like Dylan? I’m thinking Desolation Row style here. Answer: basically you don’t. He’s one of a kind. Even so, that doesn’t mean we can’t try.

I NEVER UNDERSTOOD
You had a dream in the beginning
You had a dream that sounded good
Why you woke up and lived the nightmare
I never understood

You climbed the mountain after midnight
Under the light of a full moon
I heard that come a frozen morning
You stole the big shot’s hot air balloon
You ended up among the gravestones
Where dead bodies know their place
You dressed yourself in magazines
Put on your bravest face

The letter you said you sent me
Never made it to base camp
A mailman in the snowstorm died
His body cold and damp
And inside looking out
You see a heaven upon earth
But that’s just the mirror playing tricks on you
That’s a fact for what it’s worth

In summer we light the candles
The sun don’t shine no more
In summer the sea gets restless
And besides this world’s at war
With every living species
Well maybe just the one’s that make most noise
That’s only heard by deaf ears
And the Pan’s poisoned lost boys

You had a dream in the beginning
You had a dream that sounded good
Why you woke up and lived the nightmare
I never understood

IN PRAISE OF SHADOWS

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

‘The Magic of Shadows Set Free’

Just a song, plus its lyrics, today. It’s called ‘In Praise of Shadows’ and it’s from my first album ‘Dream Rescuer’. I hope you enjoy.

IN PRAISE OF SHADOWS

This is a song for all the shadows
Where the good and the bad both hide
A safe haven for the lost souls
Where no one takes up sides

No colours in my shadow
It just follows me around

No danger in a shadow
It’s as constant as a heart
An island in a sea of light
A restless piece of art

No colours in my shadow
It just follows me around
It never gets to fly away
It’s stuck to me on the ground

FOR THE RECORD YOU SHOULD KNOW I FEEL THE SAME

le touc2 (2)‘After The Storm’ by Zoolon or, better put; ‘The wild and windy night, That the rain washed away, Has left a pool of tears, Crying for the day’ – Paul McCartney from the song ‘Long & Winding Road’

I’ve been reading Arthurian tales from various sources. I got hooked. Thought I’d write some words about them. ‘The Lady of The Lake’ legend for some reason fascinated me the most. For one thing she has so many variations to her forename mainly beginning with ‘N’ – none of which I can pronounce – but more than that is that she has a mystical rather than a magical feel, more so than the other characters.

I’ll play around with the words I wrote as I think when edited to fit a melody I might have a new song in the making. Anyway, first of all here’s my song ‘Pride & Time’ that pretty much fits the darkish mood of ‘The Lady of The Lakes’ words. The actual words follow on behind. I hope you enjoy;

lady of the lake (2)Artist unknown

‘N’

Sincerity counts for nothing to The Lady of The Lake

She’s forgotten all her secrets; all her vows

She paints pictures, speaks in riddles I can’t work out

Smiles, claps her hands and takes the bows

They called you an ‘enchantress’ in the legend

You said you were good with that and the fancy gig you got

Now you live in dread of tidal waves and suffocating

I’m thinking you got sick and tired and lost the plot

What about that sword you gave big man?

The death wish King; the one who time forgot

Did you ever regret you got mixed up in the trials and tribulations

Of a castle in the air called Camelot?

Somewhere I read you ‘transcended notoriety’

And that you once knew the ‘misty path to Avalon’

I heard you want to vacate your crystal cave apartment

Go abroad and soak up the rays in Babylon?

Falling stars and magic moments lost for ever

Now that the unicorns and dragons are no more

They’re all buried in an unnamed grave in a concrete wonderland

You’ve no idea you hold the keys to the unlocked door

Are you still regretting drowning in love’s sorrow?

Don’t you miss the limelight, the romance and the fame?

Wishing you could turn back time doesn’t help none

For the record you should know I feel the same
