WE ONCE WALKED HAND IN HAND

hand in hand

‘Before the Light Went Out’

Mother Earth is now a victim
She’s not a magnet any more
We’ve stripped her of her blue, green cloak
Looked the other way as her children were washed up on the shore

“Let’s give her a cloak of plastic
That’ll warm her up real good
Tell you what? Let’s make all things out of plastic
Let’s set fire to the forests, burn that stack of wood”

Mother Earth never had a voice
Never need one when we walked hand in hand
That was before the swarm turned up
The mob of humans who took command

I’m thinking this backing track, ‘Emotional Groove – A Minor works with the words. It’s a little dark; a little laid back. Hope you enjoy;

Emotional Grove is from my Guitar Jam album. If you want to find out more re this or any of my other work it accessible below;

‘NO-BELL PRIZE’ FOR DOOR KNOCKERS

DOOR KNOCKER

‘No-Bell Prize Winner 2014’
Artist Unknown

A confession. This is true. When I was a kid about 5 or 6 years old I remember my parents talking about the Nobel Prize. At the time I didn’t really take in what they were talking about. To me it sounded like it was a prize awarded to people who had an extra special type of door knocker instead of a door bell (as in ‘No-Bell’ Prize – although to me it should always have been called the ‘Door Knocker’ Prize). For the next few years I checked out door knockers in order to see if there were any candidates for the award where we lived. I lived in hope my parents might just buy a door knocker like no other. Of course, it never happened. What a waste of my time. Sure, I felt a bit stupid when years later I found out that Nobel Prizes are selected across 6 categories, Literature, Economy, Physiology or Medicine, Physics, Chemistry and Peace. No door knockers at all.

This story came back to haunt me this summer in France. A mate of mine was telling everyone that his sister was about to marry this professor bloke. Apparently he’s a great bloke and my mate added, “Man, has he got one big brain.” That had me thinking so I asked if the professor had a really big head to cope with his great big brain. I was being serious. I genuinely thought the professor would be a sniper’s dream. That’s when everyone fell about laughing. They had to explain to me why they were laughing. A sad moment.

Anyhow, I’ve always been a bit like on the logical front hence when I was 16 I wrote one of my first ever ‘proper’ songs. A song about myself. It’s never been anything more than just a demo recording, yet just for the fun of it here it is. First the lyrics, then below the song itself. It’s called ‘Ants in Awkward Places’. I hope you enjoy

ANTS IN AWKWARD PLACES

I’m blind to all that’s going on around me
Blind to all the secrets others share
Blind to all the politics of people
To me most things get lost into thin air

I got a monkey on my back
I got a monster under my bed
I got ants in awkward places
I got confusion in my head

So how come I get this strangest feeling
Every time the end game closes in
If I deliver up my deepest feelings
You’d see my heart is only made of tin

There’s more to life than endless celebration
More to life than gambling and champagne
More to life than the rituals of living
More to life than this most curious game

I got a monkey on my back
I got a monster under my bed
I got ants in awkward places
I got confusion in my head

I got a monkey on my back
I got a monster under my bed
I got ants in awkward places
I got confusion in my head

IT’S LIKE YOU DON’T EXIST

owl1

‘Cleo the Wise Owl’
She doesn’t talk that much but she did mention that
without bees, seeds & trees we are nothing.

Songs that that tell stories are fascinating me lately. I’m not sure why, although the plus with a song is – providing the melody is a good one – that a lyricist can get away with just a few words and a decent chorus to tell his tale.  Here’s the beginnings of such a song – the basic lyric/verse to be chopped about with come the time to record.

THE BLUES DON’T GET REVIEWS

I saw you on the silver screen
Living out the dream
Praise and fame and fortune
And a low calorie regime

I wrote the song you never heard
Maybe you didn’t like the blues?
At least not the way I sung them
The blues don’t get reviews

You’re all over the social media
The newspapers want you too
On the front of every glossy magazine
Outside the paparazzi form a queue

Yet sometimes on a rainy day
Sometimes in the mist
Sometimes in a crowded room
It’s like you don’t exist

What about some music? Here’s an ‘Uplifting Grove – C Mixolydian’ from the new ‘Guitar Jam, Volume 1 – Zoolon Audio Backing Tracks’ Album available on BANDCAMP

It’s designed for musicians but works as a piece of uplifting music.

For the record it’s not just all my albums that are available for download on  BANDCAMP  these days. Now you can select and download individual tracks for just £1 or other currency equivalents. I think they call it ‘Pick ‘n Mix’.

MUSHROOMS, GRAVESTONES, SPIDERS & BEES

mushrooms3 (2)

‘Mushroom Quartet’

I don’t make a habit of hanging out in graveyards. The only reason I found myself in one on Saturday morning was because it was pouring with rain and the path through the graves of St Eanswythe Church was a shortcut from where my car was parked and the place I was heading for.

Having loads of gravestones is only to be expected in a graveyard. But not mushrooms. Loads of them all over the place. They looked edible but I wasn’t taking any chances. A pity, mushrooms are my favourite food.

‘Mushrooms, Minder’s of The Dead’

Taking that walk reminded me that back in 2017 I posted the story of St Eanswythe aka the Princess Who Morphed Into a Fish  After doing a bit of research on her I discovered she was an Anglo-Saxon princess who died in 640 aged just 26 and that when she got depressed she generally turned herself into a fish – I never did find out what kind of fish – and had a swim in the sea until she felt better about life in general. I like to think she decided to be a starfish when times were bleak. I’m not sure why, although if she had any commonsense you’d think she’d turn herself into a mermaid, unless she was embarrassed that maybe she didn’t have their regulation long hair? Who knows.

Also, that the Pope made her a Saint because she made water defy gravity and run uphill is pretty amazing. Just imagine that. I’m guessing she could make it rain upwards if she had the mind to do so. No more rain on sunny days. Neat.

Personally I’d always thought the Pope made her a Saint because – impressively –  nobody in the whole world could pronounce her name. How wrong I was. Are the mushrooms something to do with Saint Eanswythe previously known as Princess Eanswythe? We’ll never know.

Now for the Saturday morning spider’s webs on my car. No actual spiders though. Just abandoned webs. It looked like they left in a hurry. I’m thinking the spiders heard I was off to see Princess Eanswythe and ran off some place.

Time for some music. This song is about one of my favourite living things, ‘Bees’ – better put, the ‘lack of a bees’ because that’s what the song is about. It’s called ‘Sunlight & The Dust’ and it’s from my album, ‘Dream Rescuer’. You’ll find this album and all my others on BANDCAMP  I hope you enjoy;

ZOOLON ON SALFORD CITY RADIO

salford2

I had a dream of the nightmare kind last night. I dreamed that I couldn’t play the piano anymore. Not good. I was still thinking about that when going through my messages earlier today. Then the day got better. Salford City Radio notified me that my song – the one that featured the unique Fifi Rong – ‘Devil’s Kiss’ would get airplay on one of their shows. Like any other musician I want to get my music heard and this radio station is very well respected having been around for over 12 years. I forgot about the nightmare . Thank you Salford. Thank you, the host Callum Mitchell-Simon who also had some kind words he threw my way.

Anyhow, the message from Callum read, ‘This weeks show features local acts The C33’s / LIINES / The Chief Of Seattle, as well as Elizabeth The Second / Galli / Tetes De Pois / Courtney Barnett / PJ Harvey. Also featuring acts from my current Reverbnation campaign, Pilgrims Dream / Zoolon / Altinak / Michael Baker. Join me every Monday from 9pm at 94.4FM, online, via the TuneIn app and NOWtv’.
Here’s the link – SALFORD CITY RADIO

If you’ve not heard ‘Devil’s Kiss’ before or if you want another listen, here it is. I hope you enjoy;

Here’s a recording of the show. There aren’t any time links but having checked it out ‘Devil’s Kiss’ is about a third of the way in.

THE SUN DON’T SHINE

pride and time1 (3)

‘A broken mirror left behind’

A couple of posts back I wrote some semi-lyrical words. I called them ‘The Secrets of the Blind’ I have been playing around with them hoping to get a new song together. I’m still playing around, adding a slightly different take on the evolution of the songs words and melody. If not prompted by the brilliant poet YASSY KHAN I wouldn’t have got this far with this one. If you don’t know her already I recommend you give her blog a visit. As ever with lyrics they sing better than they read.

The secrets of the blind
A broken mirror left behind
Playing games with your mind
However undefined
They may be

When all you see is what’s inside your head
Like the open book you never read
For daylight read instead
The darkness of the dead
The sun don’t shine

You captured all the stars
From the West End to Planet Mars
Even today you bear the scars
Of burning violins and old guitars
You cannot see

The day Saint Peter broke your heart
That’s when you almost fell apart
You swapped a lead role for a bit part
That wasn’t very smart
I heard you say

Some music. Another track from Guitar Jam – Volume 1. This one is called ‘Alternative Rock Groove – F Major. I hope you enjoy;

The album itself, along with all my other albums are available on BANDCAMP

THE ARTIST

georges self2 (2)

I can’t draw let alone alone paint. However, fellow blogger Ted Giffin can. Not just can, he’s actually a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University, the Herron School of Art, plus he’s a musician as well.

So, I get to see a pic of me (above) on his blog. I let my mother take a look and she says she want’s it for her birthday. Ted obliges. Not only that, he paints version two (below). She’s over the moon.

ted4 (2)

I get speaking to the old man. He says, and I quote, “You couldn’t ask Ted to knock one out for Shirl could you? I’ll add it to her list of b’day presents.” Shirley = my mother. Once more, Ted obliges. Her birthday was a success all round. Her pic below.

georges-mum (2)

We were all in a Turkish restaurant on the big day. The old man reminds me that back in 2017 Ted did the artwork for the front and back covers for his book, ‘Notoriously Naked Flames’, so for good measure I’ve included these also, for no other reason than it shows, yet again, that Ted is a great talent.

I recommend you check out the work of TED GIFFIN and, if you don’t know him already, see what you’re missing.

Time for some music. Here’s one from the new album available on BANDCAMP . It’s called ‘Melancholy Groove’. I hope you like it;

MUSIC RELATED MERCHANDISE

WP Shirt (smaller)

This is going to sound like the unashamed marketing it is. So I’ll apologize right at the start. If you can hang in there, that would be good, and if nothing else you might want to check out my artwork on a whole host of  items via this LINK.

I’ve often wondered what else I can do with this website and what is, to some extent, the ‘Zoolon’ brand. Then I got the idea to design my own custom clothing and merchandise.

I’ve designed a mass of unique music and guitar based slogans and graphics for not just women’s, men’s and unisex tee-shirts of all shapes and sizes, but also I’ve had them printed on hoodies, leggings, socks, mugs, phone cases, pillows and tote bags.

The unusual range I have here you might like for yourself or alternatively you may think they make great gifts. If you fancy checking the clothing and merchandise out here (again) is the LINK to access the store.

WP Clothes 3

These items can be shipped to the UK, USA, all European Countries, Canada, Australia & New Zealand.

WP Clothes 2

No worries if these things bore you rigid.

WP Clothes 1

Also, I’ve now listed all of Zoolon’s published music on the widget column on the right. So if you wish to listen for free while you search you know where to look.

If you’ve hung in this far I think it only right that I say, ‘thank you’ ~ Zoolon aka George

THE SCREAM OF THE FOX

ardennes3The Day After Madame La Guillotine Stopped By

With some adaption I’m hoping I might have a new lyric for an acoustic song here.

THE SCREAM OF THE FOX
Fishing for rainbows
Under dark clouds

No antidote for dreaming
In the daylight hours

You’ve captured the bird song
The sounds of the sea
Captured the silence
Of infinity

Captured the gale
The scream of the fox
Captured the earthquake
The tick of the clock

Yet now when you’re hunting
The old sounds they’ve freed
All that you’re hearing
Is a human stampede

As ever with a lyric it sings better than it reads. Anyhow, some reflective music from my ‘Rainbow’s End’ album. I hope you enjoy.

DARK DAYS & NEW IDEAS

george23‘Dark Days & New Ideas’

‘YOU STRIKE THE MATCH – YOU ARE THE FLAME’

Tomorrows’ everlasting

Yesterday is dead

Today is just a fantasy

Of what’s spinning inside my head

I can’t second guess the answers

To your questions; I just don’t know

I major in uncertainty

Like sunshine on fresh fallen snow

I couldn’t take the upper hand

Couldn’t take charge of any game

I hunt alone, not in a crowd

You strike the match – you are the flame

So light your fire, fan the blaze

I never planned to have a plan

I never buy a ticket

After the sell-out games began

The sisterhood of women

The brotherhood of man

Means nothing to the egotists

Close your eyes; you’ll understand

You hear me when I’m not speaking

You follow where I don’t go

You’ve got the wrong idea

I’m just an act – I’m not the show

If you’ve not heard it before, you might like this song, ‘Rexie Believes in Magic’ from my ‘Dream Rescuer’ album. It’s the opposite to my new words above. I hope you enjoy;
