THE BUTTERFLY’S EMBRACE

I see The Old Man is back after a long lay off.

- MIKE STEEDEN -

A Time-Travelling Tale that ends well

Christmas Day, 2842CE. A universe aeons away goes ‘phut’: In no more than a picosecond, complete darkness. The only sound, that of a whispering zephyr. In its wake, a pseudo macrocosm’s ever-decreasing guttural burps fading away into a soundless zilch. Left behind, ruination’s nothingness. The crumpled scum perished. Once relishing in a perverse, now empty, endlessness, lovely Lily’s mission is over and done with.

A field south of Paris, 1938CE: As of the newborn moment, looking skyward, a sparkling flash of disco-dancing stars, glittering like pale turquoise precious gems on a black velvet backcloth, she rediscovered her sanity. Heavenly bodies magical frolics short-lived, a momentary spectacle foretelling serendipity had taken her back home. Pure-blooded time had slumbered far too long. Quick-witted incandescent celestial prima ballerinas now tripping the light fantastic, just for her. An extravaganza that put menacing iniquity to shame, for…

DREAMS & UNLOCKED PRISONS

‘The book of love has music in it
In fact that’s where music comes from’

Songwriter: Stephin Merritt

In a bid to curb the new variant coronavirus – that is 70% more catchable than the original – from spreading more rapidly in Kent I’m stuck in my unlocked prison in Tier 4 top-level lockdown. Only the food shops are open. It’s a pity I never got my Christmas gifts for the family online. It’s too late now. I’ve said farewell to creativity for Christmas hence today a song of mine from 2017 when everything was easy. First the lyrics, then the song itself. Sing along if you want. It’s called ‘Dream Rescuer’. I hope you enjoy, and HAPPY CHRISTMAS to everyone no matter what you believe in, or no belief at all.

You rescued dreams
And nightmare schemes
Spinning around inside your head
You kept them in your diary
A book you said you’d never read

Come morning
Come daylight
You’re lost in time
A dream you dared to dream
Come morning
Come daylight
You’re lost this time
I hope I said goodbye

You rescued dreams
And nightmare schemes
Spinning around inside my head
Pressed Petals
And four leaf clovers
Turning the pages
Of wild illusions

‘Dream Rescuer’ is the title track from my album of the same name. It can be downloaded from BANDCAMP It’s a ten track album for just £5 (or equivalent) you might like.

A reminder that someday my guitar and me will get back to France

CHASING ONE MORE DREAM

‘The squirrel knows everything’

I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling the puzzles apart
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart’

From ‘The Scientist’ by Coldplay

In trying to write a basic verse as the basis for an American country style lyric, it didn’t go to plan, hence I nearly gave up. It’s a storytelling genre I don’t think I’ll ever master. But what the hell, it’s winter; it’s lockdown; I’m English; it’s Christmas.

CHASING ONE MORE DREAM

“Your songs are full of sadness
You know we’ll never get along
The time has come to end this
There’s no place together where we belong”

She sent me a ‘Happy Christmas’ card
Got it in the post yesterday
Inside she’d written ‘see you whenever’
A poor excuse, a poor cliché

Looking out of my bedroom window
The sky, all shades of festive grey
That was when the card she sent
I ripped in two, then threw away

Are there really songs of happiness
That don’t sound like over-sugared cream?
I’d rather bandage sorrow
Than go chasing one more dream

Here’s a number from my ‘The Forgotten Daughter Of Zeus’ album. It’s called ‘Hidden Beneath’. I hope you enjoy.

CITY OF HEARTBEATS

‘Door to Avalon’

CITY OF HEARTBEATS

What’ll we do when it’s over and done with?
What’ll we do when we unlock the door?
What’ll we do when we crawl out of the subway?
What’ll we do if it’s not like before?

What’ll we see in the City of Heartbeats?
What’ll we see in the waves and the tide?
What’ll we see in the fields of the living?
What’ll we see with our eyes open wide?

What’ll we make of shadows as dancers?
What’ll we make of blue skies and the stars?
What’ll we make of faces uncovered?
And what’ll we make of reborn guitars?

The answer lives in that City of Heartbeats
The place where we will hold hands once more
The answer is found when she rests her head on your shoulder
No need to worry about what went before

Here’s my song, ‘Rebirth’, a song that fits these words. I hope you enjoy;

GREY WOLF HOWLING AT THE MOON

Artwork by Dan Barrett

HOWLING AT THE MOON

It’s a pointless conversation
In a dark and empty room
You might as well go speak to
The grey wolf howling at The Moon

Searching for castles in the air
Lost in that same dark and empty room
Thinking of tomorrow’s daydreams
Praying they’ll come true sometime soon

This day, it counts for nothing
Worldwide, faces in disguise
In the clear sight of the invisible
Makes for sad eyes and sad goodbyes

Was it written in the stars
Or dressed up in some new tune
Those pointless conversations
Howling at The Moon?

Music wise the song below – one I wrote back when I was a student – fits my current mood, lost in a lock-down’s creativity free zone. The song seems it has real purpose now. I’d like to give it a new title. I hope you enjoy;

DANCING WITH THE SHADOWS

DANCING IN THE SHADOWS

We’re dancing with the shadows
To the heartbeat of the moon
While you’re out there doing battle
To a bygone marching tune

We’re a reality waiting to happen
No longer hiding behind closed doors
Your charisma counts for sweet nothing, my friend
When there is no mesmerized applause

We’re dancing with the shadows
To the shimmer of the sun
You’re never going to tame us now
Not me, not anyone

Dancing with the shadows
And dreaming of the day
When truth and freedom are a given
And the silent have their say

We’re dancing with the shadows
To the whisper of the waves
Dancing with the shadows
No more graves, no barricades

Of this week’s pics only the fourth one is mine. The others are curtesy of the old man. He’s not been 100% for a while now, hence he’s not been writing nor blogging. Some of you might know him. His name is Mike Steeden and he asked me to send his regards. Anyway, we dragged him out on the only decent day we’ve had over the last few weeks. My sea pics were taken on the coastline, he’d found a place below I’d never noticed before. I liked his work more than my own on the day.

Time for some music. This week, ‘Ticking Clock’ from my ‘Dream Rescuer’ album. The album is available for download at BANDCAMP I hope you enjoy;

Lastly, one of many accidental photos from the old man – one of about thirty when he left his finger on the phone without thinking. I don’t mind being a multitude of accidental silhouettes sometimes.

LIPSTICK GIRL & TRADING SUITS FOR UNIFORMS

LIPSTICK GIRL & TRADING SUITS FOR UNIFORMS

The only sounds I’m hearing are birdsong, bombs and guns
I ask myself the question, ‘Are we the only ones
With eyes that see and hearts that break and hands that paint the scene?
While out there in the muddy Somme, they all died aged nineteen’

Scroll forward another century, no history books required
Big liars with big egos, how come their followers admired?
Lipstick girl, at rest in shadows, a heart that beats no more
Since Big Ego traded suits for uniforms kicking off an uncivil war

I ought to explain who ‘lipstick girl’ is. She’s a real person and she’s out there somewhere. On my blog post last week a few of us spoke about the lipstick girl and how she got badly treated by a shopworker aggressively talking down to her for no good reason, saying her lipstick wasn’t an essential item, so she couldn’t buy it. Her story got in the national news. Anyhow, it got me thinking that lipstick girl would be my metaphor for all good people and represent a reflection of the bad places humanity has been, and still is. Shopworker person, just a figure of speech for all that is rotten.

Time for a song, an old one at that. I wrote back in 2014 and called it ‘Shout at Newsreels’. I’ve never done much with this number so far but it fits this post, plus I have been shouting at news channels lately. I hope you enjoy;

OLD LADY & HER LIGHT-BULBS

‘Pics of an angry sea & friendly clouds’

Hiding away where no one can find you is so much better than living out a pandemic locked away in a no man’s land where everyone thinks they ‘absolutely‘ must scores moral points.

The old blind lady knew that. She’d lived through wars and famine and years of the hatred of people like her, who knew stuff but couldn’t see a thing.

In the supermarket the woman on the checkout who sighed a lot told the old lady that light-bulbs weren’t essential items for blind people in lockdown. She said, “You must know you’re only allowed to buy essentials these days.”

The old lady put it to the woman who sighed a lot, that her Guide Dog could see and that was why she wanted a light-bulb. Request denied, the old lady wandered off home.

On Guy Fawkes night the explosions of fireworks scared the life out of all the dogs, cats and confused bats in the neighborhood. The woman on the checkout who sighed a lot had agreed with all her customers that fireworks were essentials.

Time for some gentle music for sad, sometimes silent, times. ‘A Life’ it’s called. It’s from my ‘Dream Rescuer’ album available for download from BANDCAMP I hope you enjoy;

HONESTY & FABRICATIONS

Photographs courtesy of the sea

Honesty and fabrications
All that glitters can’t be good
Smiles, tears and accusations
Tell a kind of truth no one understood

I live in a hole in the ground
Above live the germs. Happy germs.
They play football most days
In empty stadiums
Mostly though
They can get on your nerves
They knock on my door uninvited
Chanting songs of imaginary guilt
Songs no one needs to know

I’d been hoping
In my forever hole
My neighbours
Were rabbits
Maybe badgers
Definitely not ants
But mainly they are rats
Fat rats, in smart suits
Making money out of politics
And screwing up people’s lives

Next door in the tower
Lives an overfed woodlice
He asked me if I had a gun
I told him I didn’t do guns
But I do climb fences OK
He speaks a lot
But doesn’t say much
He doesn’t like the blackbirds
And the best thing is
They don’t like him

Honesty and fabrications
All that glitters can’t be good
Smiles, tears and accusations
Tell a kind of truth no one understood

A quote I forgot, but rate. One that just came back to me a minute ago.
‘Lose your dreams and you might lose your mind’ – Mick Jagger

THE WHITE DONKEY THAT WAS REALLY A PONY

I met my 5 year old nephew, Jackson, for the first time this weekend. I had seen him once before but that was in a crowded family gathering ages ago. Him and his dad, my oldest brother, came to stay from a long way away.

Jackson is a thinker. A gentle, clever little bloke as well. It was after a long walk checking out the single donkey and Shetland ponies in the field on the edge of the forest up the road from where I live, when I showed him my guitars. Impressed, I could see he’d like to try them out. The only problem being they’re all bigger than he is.  Having done a bit of thinking myself I remembered my first mandolin. I hadn’t played that one for years. Jackson, who’d never played musical instruments before, took to it the best way a 5 year can. He wanted to show his dad he’d got a basic handle on playing the mandolin – see the pic above. I did the chords, he the strings. Between us ‘sound as melody’ – just. Jackson had done well on his first lesson.

I asked him if he wanted to put a song together that I would record for him for keeps. So that is what we did. Our ad-lib session worked well enough and the recording became very special to little Jackson. When it came to the title he decided on ‘White Donkey’, “like the one I fed loads of grass”. I didn’t want to ruin it by pointing out that the white one was a Shetland Pony. It never mattered anyway, music is music, titles are whatever you want them to be.

When it came to the recording, Jackson is on percussion – I had him practice beforehand – and vocals. He did ever so well for a first timer.  It’s only a short piece, just 30 seconds tops. Here it is. Well done Jackson;

And here’s one of my backing tracks, ‘Surf Pop Groove – B Major’. The download of the 4 hour album is available BANDCAMP – I hope you enjoy;
