Here’s a track from my new album, ‘Dream Rescuer’. The song is called ‘Sunlight & The Dust” and is adapted from a poem by my father, Mike Steeden. I’ve never used the words of others when composing before, yet I thought this poem would not find the journey to the Land of Lyrics too troublesome. I hope you like it. The album itself you can find on Bandcamp, where you can listen for free, yet if you find you like what you hear, then the option to buy is available.

A collaboration! Sounds marvelous. I’m really digging this and compliments to the lyricist as well

Thanks. Not so much a collaboration. I had a melody but no words. I was thumbing through one of his books when I spotted this one and asked if I could play around with it. He said he didn’t mind, thankfully.

That is awesome. Your father writes amazing poetry and the music is wonderful. I have a new computer and for once I can hear the sound without it being all weird and wobbly. Listening to this made me so happy for you! 🙂

I’m here with my boss so it’s hard to listen to music right now. Hopefully I will remember to come back to this!

I’ll pay you a commission if you get your boss to dig deep and buy. Do bosses like music?

George, “Sunlight And The Dust” is a powerful and haunting commentary on the world at large. The words and the music paint a bleak picture, the direction of the human race, resulting in a barren landscape of sunlight and dust. For me this is a very post-apocalyptic vision. I offer my compliments to the both of you, a fabulous “not so much a collaboration” capturing the creativity of two brilliant minds. Exceptionally well done. ~ Mia

I knew the moment I read the poem it had to be a song, Mia – just knew it. Thank you M & R.

Thank you. I would do a collaboration, but using someone else’s words always feels like plagiarism. I’d never done that before. I didn’t mind on this one because when I read it, it felt like a song to be sung. Also, knowing he was chuffed made it worthwhile.

I don’t think it’s plagiarism at all!! He is your father, not some stranger off the street. I’m sure he’d be thrilled by it. Plus, who knows his emotions better than his son? 😉

I think, with me it’s because I like handling the whole process myself. The composing, the playing, the production, the mixing etc. Having said that, I am pleased with the result with this song – my father is as well. This poem of his had few syllables in the verse – which is good when composing; plus it had a natural chorus. Basically, you’re right thinking about it.

I’ve felt the same about writing, George. It’s not often I like to take from others, but when Mike (not your dad, another one) gave me a character from his universe to muck about with, I ended up creating that middle-grade fantasy I can’t shut up about on my own site. 🙂 But there’s another case of this creative-ripple-inspiration (damn, I wish I was better at compound words): so I started following yet another photography because, reasons, and while scoping out his photography another writer’s chatting with me about co-writing some twilight zone type stuff. And all at once I see a shot the photographer made and a story just BAM, in my head. I HAD to write it, but without the photo it just wouldn’t be any fun. So I reached out to him for permission. Hoping to share that short fic on the site soon.
And then it happened AGAIN! But there’s been no time to write that flash fic what with Blondie turning 7 around here.
It doesn’t hurt to have that bit of collaboration now and again, I think. Imagination shouldn’t be encased in glass with a “look but don’t touch” policy. So I’m glad you gave it a go. xxxxxx

I hear what you say. With me I like the fact that – this bit sounds like boasting, but I’m not that sort of person – I write the lyrics; compose the melody; play every instrument; do the vocal; produce and mix all my work. Working with someone else is a ‘no go’ area for me. With Sunlight & The Dust, at least I chose the poem from his first book. A lot of verse he writes has lines far to too to work in a song, but this one had just a few syllables per line and an obvious chorus. It just felt right. So for me, providing it is my choice, I guess I’m agreeing with you, that it doesn’t hurt to collaborate sometimes.

Exactly. I wouldn’t want to do it all the time, because I like having *my* stuff and *my* control and *my* rules. But running alone all the time can get stale, too, which makes the occasional mix-up all the more important.

Running alone is best, yet right now I’m expanding the business into all sorts of places – what I’d give to have staff. Soon I hope.

Don’t you spread yourself too thin now, George. I insist that you take care of yourself.

At least I’ve remembered to eat these last few days. The thing is, to do all the creative stuff I need to do, I also need to treble up on the income streams. It’s all going really well, I just want it bigger.

I listened to this song now about 3 or 4 times and it’s a good sign if I like it more and more 🙂
Lyrics are touching, voice, pace….
Reminds me of so many things I’ve listened to, yet is none of them. I enjoy that – unique and well fitted to my existing tastes. Looking forward to hearing more creations from you and maybe those collaborations that happen naturally, as they do.

Thank you, Ka. Feedback is all important. I will probably post another song from the album today. ‘Rexie Believes in Magic’ – it’s a little odd, but I enjoyed writing it. Have a good day, George aka Zoolon (sometimes).
