FAULT LINES

(Another picture I took at the World Puppet Theatre Festival in Charleville-Mézières, France)

This is a demo I made a couple of years back. Just added it to my SoundCloud. I got the idea for the lyric from Rudyard Kipling’s quote, “He travels the fastest who travels alone.” It always sounded the way things should be to me. The lyrics (definitely not poetry) follow on from the link to the song. Hope you enjoy it. The link is below;

FAULT LINES

I travel the fastest,

In a world that is shrinking, my heart turns to stone,

I’ll trade this new freedom; for all that I have known.

I who travel alone,

Like a worn-out suit in a charity shop,

I’d trade this new freedom; my religion I’d swap.

We are thrown into this world,

We are thrown into this world,

We are thrown into this world,

Some tumble; some will fall.

The pendulum swings,

Tectonic plates shift, fault lines are drifting for now

Snapping apart the bond of the peasant and plough.

Turn around and look back for me,

That is the way a heart learns to bleed.

I can see what needs doing,

I can feel all the pain,

I can reach out and touch,

But I can’t loosen the chain.

We are thrown into this world,

We are thrown into this world,

We are thrown into this world,

Some tumble; some will fall.

I can see what needs doing,

I can feel all the pain,

I can reach out and touch,

But I can’t loosen the chain.

I travel the fastest,

In a world that is shrinking, my heart turns to stone,

I’ll trade this new freedom; for all that I have known.

I travel alone,

Like a worn out suit in a charity shop,

I’d trade this new freedom; my religion I’d swap.

We are thrown into this world,

We are thrown into this world,

We are thrown into this world,

Some tumble; some will fall.

  1. There’s a hard, sultry feel when the guitar carries just as much rhythm as percussion. This is the sort of song sung with a finger hooking the coat over one shoulder while the other hand grips the bottle in a paper bag.
…not sure I should be encouraging that sort of scene, though…
    um…
the other hand is holding a guitar just a few inches from the pavement.
    Whew! Much better. 🙂

      1. Pish, I got my albums mixed up! I was referring to NEW BLOOD earlier. As for SCRATCH MY BACK: Hey, “Book of Love” is a good song. And I’ll argue with anyone that Peter Gabriel’s rendition of “Heroes” far surpasses David Bowie’s.
Yeah. I went there. Hell, I even blogged about it a while back. It’ll come round again in November–keep your eyes open. 🙂

      2. Oh dear, I’d probably drive you nuts, too…and my kids. We have these phases where we can only listen to ONE song, and that’s it. I’ve had to listen to the same sing-along CD for WEEKS now…(insert frantic hair-pulling here)
As for Gabriel, I want to make sure the link on the blog’s still good before I send it your way. Don’t let me forget! 😉
